  • Try not to worry positivemummy, I had to go for several visits because I was told my dental hygiene was not good enough. I was asounded because I really look after my teeth and always have (brushing 4 times a day) and my dentist never commented on it.

Anyway, I had to go for a lesson in toothbrushing and I had to have the plague levels on my teeth recorded. I think you have to have less than 20% on your teeth, mine was slightly over by a couple of % so I had to come back, the next time I only had 3% which is remarkable and I had to have it recorded again a few weeks later to make sure it wasn't a one off.

Only then did I get the go ahead for treatment. I recommend getting disclosure tablets which will help to identify areas you are missing, and a small dentist mirror so you can examine every surface of each tooth to see where you have missed.

    Hope that reassures you!

  • thanks folks for you kind and helpful words, they've cheered me up. choccy face thats really interesting to hear you too were put through the mill a bit before they would refer you. i will get some of those tablets (i haven't used them since i was about 10!!) i used to love them tho and it would be interesting to see if i'm missing anything. i am dissapointed with my dentist a little but i dont want to slate him, if thats his guidelines then so be it, he is a good dentist, its just his manner which is awkward and scary, but on the good side i'm grateful i have a dentist in this day and age!!!:D i will not be deterred in this so i'll be doing my upmost i can. thanks for your support. i'm off to brush my teeth now!:D :j
    totally a tog!:D
  • I've used the disclosing tablets, there were a couple in my freebee intro pack at the orthodontist although he's never recommended them. I tried them out of interest and had no problem with my teeth but had a hell of a job getting the bright blue off my lips which were a bit chapped that day! And if you have the slightest bit of limescale in your sink you'd better have the scourer ready!

To make you feel better about not having braces yet, positivelymummy, had an adjustment a couple of days ago and my lovely orthodontist took me at my word when I said 'no pain, no gain' and really went for it - so I'm off to heat up the soup as biting is not on the agenda. Also, had to refuse cake at a meeting today, even though it looked wonderful, as you don't want to be doing cake unless there is a mirror, an interdental stick and a moment's privacy before you open your mouth again!

hello everyone...just had my sons fitted..these are his 1st (not the perm't ones) only concern i have is that the wire has a little "play" not sure if it suppose to??
  • I was 14 when I had braces and if I remember they were on for about 2 years,I also had a different one to wear at night that fitted on to my face it was gross but they did straighten them. You will get some soreness in your mouth and if you have a fixed brace will have to be extra vigilant in oral hygene as there are all the little nocks and crannies to get around.let us know how it goes.
  • I had my adjustment a few days ago too Peartree and I am also in the soup club. My last few adjustments have been painless but this time it HURTS! Got a new elastic and powerchain and really could do with some wires trimming as they keep digging into my cheek. Oh the joys! :) x

I don't mind really, another step to a nicer smile.

When my hygenist used disclosing tablets on me to show the bits I'd missed, she covered my lips in vaseline first, so that they didn't turn an odd colour...

After several years of putting it off, I've finally gone and got braces. However, I didn't realise that I wouldn't be able to eat curry . Can anyone tell me if its the tumeric that will cause the braces to stain, and if so, would i be ok making my own curry but just not using turmeric? Also I was told to avoid things with tomato paste in them, is this correct?

    Thanks
    mto

ETA: I was told I would be in pain for the first couple of days but haven't had any whatsoever. Am i just lucky, or could it mean the wires aren't tight enough?

I didn't know that about curry or tomato paste. My son has been wearing braces for the last 2 years and has just had them removed about a month ago and his teeth are really white looking. We eat lots of curry, home made with Turmeric and lots of tomato paste as we are pasta freaks.
I am not saying it should be OK as you have obviously been told to avoid it for a reason.
