I never buy that "Please click on the special links, they earn a small amount of money which helps fund this website" rubbish. You see it on all these affiliate sites. It's pretty dishonest. Last year he raked in 16 million, which is quite a lot just to run a website.

But then saying, "Please click on the special links, they help earn me around 10-20 million a year and will evenually earn me a valuation of around 80 million when I exit and sell the site and user base to a large company in a year or two" would undoubtedly rub people up the wrong way, even if it was the truth.

I have to say that I am astounded by the news that this site was worth 87 million pounds - I would have valued it at a few hundred thousand! Rarely use it as I never believed it was impartial with most posters having a vested interest in something or other. And a lot of advice could have landed you in hot water. Doubt if I'll be back here.

    Bye.

Hilarious how suddenly all these posters after all these years suddenly reveal how they have been somehow wasting their time on the site or "never use it" anyway.

Good riddance. Close the door on the way out.

Its quite funny, I've looked through the forums and read the numerous posts on this and really cant understand the disgust being shown. For 9 yrs we have all recieved FREE advice, we have all been GIVEN FOR FREE the platform to advise and gain advice from others. In 8 yrs that i have been reading the forums i have never seen a thread from anyone offering to chip in for server costs, or hosting costs, maybe there have been private offers, but certainly not from the millions of users that have used this FREE service, and now people are complaining that the owner that has invested so much time in building this FREE platform has gained some reward, at the same time ensuring that the principals of the site are upheld. Its that typical british behaviour, instead of celebrating people for achieving , we try to destroy them. such a sad society we live in. Good luck to martin and the team, the only thing i hope is that martin doesnt see all of the hate on here and think "f*** it, i wont bother campaigning anymore" would be such a shame, although at the moment , i wouldnt blame him.

yes, I used to like Martin Lewis and this site, now the £87 million sale leaves a bad taste in the mouth. Expect MSE to go downhill rapidly from here on now it is owned by money making supermarket expert ;-(

    Crikey,
A guy makes it good from a website he started to promote and help out as a sideline of his media work and all of the sudden he is a sell out. Look, Martin is only the owner, we are the heartbeat and the resource, the forum is going to be just the same, yes you might see some advertising banners, but you can filter those out, just like any other site you visit. After all this is his site, he can do with it as he pleases, and there is going to be a nice little windfall for some deserving charities. Anyone that doesn't like it, leave, simples!! (Oh sorry, that's another comparison website)
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.
