  • My budget for February is £350 - after doing so well in Jan I have decided to lower it.
  • Hi I've been lurking for a wee while now and want to get a grip with my finances so i'm in for the challenge. My aim is about £60 a week so £240 a month.
Was going to do the January one but got in a bit late.
I'll be doing my first shop on monday so we'll see what happens.
    Good luck to all!!
  • Loads of people on here making their own bread. How does the cost of making your own bread compare to buying say a tesco value loaf at 47p?I can also buy a pack of 2 part baked white baguettes for 44p,can I make them cheaper?

My February started on 23rd and my budget for this month is £50 (food, cleaning products and toiletries). Have spent almost half of that so far, including £5 on toiletries (plus a bit more using Boots gift voucher). Feel a bit more confident at staying on budget this month though, my cupboards & freezer are nicely full. I'm also eating a lot more veggie meals and tinned tuna/ sardines instead of meat which should save quite a bit!

Hope everyone has a good month :)

My Feb challange starts today as I have got a delivery coming tonight from Sainsburys (couldn't resist the saving of £2.50 on the delivery if it comes on a Thursday) but not arriving till tonight so not too bad..

I was thinking about my budget and how much I am allowing myself and I thought right, how much do I 'have' to spend on stuff that I cannot do without...so nappies (70-80 per week) around £10 wipes 4-5 packs a week so £5 ish and milk for the toddler twins at 6-7 4pinters a week so usually around £1.34 each so £10 on that, so taking it that I am trying to manage on £50 a week it leaves me with around £25 left to spend on all our food, toiletries, cleaning stuff etc for 2 adults and 3 children  (although on the subject of wipes I have around 50-60 packs stashed as I bought a load to get extra points in Tescos...

Not really a lot especially as there will be at least 1 bottle of wine and 8 cans of cider in there....

So I have decided the best way is my budget to not count for the babies stuff and to say that £25 comes out of their family allowance...leaving me £50 a week which I think is more manageable....

I looked at this as I was soo dissapointed with how much I was spending, even though I have been meal planning and making much simpler food and leaving out a lot of the unecessary treat stuff but now I can see why I was so adrift...

That's exactly what I do mama67 - but it's amazing the amused looks I get from other customers. Why? Maybe they have no concerns with what they spend or maybe they just want to bury their heads. I'm not the one that walks away frowning at my receipt and giving my OH stunned looks as I leave the shop. ;)

It all started when the boys used to have to come with me so they took itin turns to put the prices in and the other one got things from the shelves.

Was great having an idea how much I was spending so I kept it up.:D

Its not so much whether its cheaper but the taste, we just don't like the chemicall taste you get in value bread.

There is also the issue for me of additives etc in something that doesn't need them.

A bag or bascic Tesco white bread flour costs 49p (1.5kg) I can get 3 loaves from this if using just white, add in a bit of sugar, butter, dried milk powder (which you don't have to) and electric and I would think it is still cheaper but it also alot nicer and better for you and most important for me(2 growing boys) more filling. So need less.
