Devestated - Anyone know anything about debit card holds?

Basically, myself and my other half were meant to be in the canary islands now, we're not.

On tuesday i got paid and went onto Sainsburys Travel Money website to order our currency, went through the checkout process for £1400 and at the end it said "Order Not Processed" so i phoned my bank Nationwide to ensure the money hadnt come off the account, but it had. In a panic i phoned Sainsburys to be told that it hadnt gone through because my billing address didnt match my card address (Rubbish) and bearing in mind i opted for store pickup where you have to take the card used to purchase, plus ID to prove you are the card holder, not sure why this is relevant. Anyway sainsburys said they would cancel the transaction immediately and to speak to Nationwide about getting the funds back.

Following a call with Nationwide, i'm disgusted. I told the lady on the phone what had happened and how we are going on holiday in 2 days time and her response was, "Oh dear, that's a shame isnt it"... i said "A SHAME?!" she said "Well the funds will be held up for 7 days now, have you considered applying for a nationwide credit card to help with your holiday?" - What, in 2 days? Really? What are these guys sales tactics?!

Anyway, long story short, the money still hasnt appeared back in my account, Sainsburys have said they have done everything they can and cancelled it directly with the merchant bank and that it was only a pre-authorisation, and Nationwide couldnt care less. We've just lost a £1200 holiday which has been booked for 8 months, and i'm devestated with the whole situation. We have no backup cards or family who could help us out.

Does anyone know how long it should take for the funds to appear back in my account as holiday aside, i'm still in a tizzy over £1400 being missing from my account.

All help appreciated.

In my experience of a similar issue with Lastminute and a credit card payment it took 5 working days for the transaction not to show as "pending" on my account.

Come on now let's not exaggerate here. Can you not get an overdraft or is your credit rating rubbish.
Have you no friends or family that could lend you some money until your funds are released. You could take your card on holiday and withdraw whilst there.

On a separate point who is your travel insurance with?
The reason I ask is I know of no policy that would cover you for £1400 cash.

    No-one is exaggerating, it's fact.

No i dont have any friends or family that have £1400 lying around for us to go for 2 weeks in the sun, and yes my credit rating is awful so no overdraft or credit cards. Oh yes, lets go on holiday with not a single penny, waiting indefinately for the funds to appear back in our account just HOPING that we may be able to eat and drink one day soon.

With regards travel insurance, it's with Virgin, and if you know of NO travel insurance that would cover you for £1400 then how is that relevant?

From all the responses i've seen you leave over the years, yours are always argumentative and hoping to strike up some kind of debate, my partner is in bits about this, her father died a 9 months ago which is why we booked it to get a break away from things, ignorant doylum.

Why did you lose the holiday? Wasn't it paid for considering you were departing in 2 days.

If your bank can clearly see that what has happened is not your error and you explain the situation to them, i'm sure they will arrange to sort this out for you. Don't lose your temper with them, just call them and explain exactly whats happened, calmly.

Go down the bank and I'll sure they'll sort something out. I've had problems like this happen before and after talking to the bank manager, the bank just gave us an interest free overdraft for 30 days as a goodwill gesture. or maybe it was cancellation of overdraft charges - I'll never know as by the time we got there, unpacked, slept, etc, the money was back in the account anyway so didn't need it, but it was a nice token. Did also have emergency spending money and a CC though, just in case!

Assuming the story is true then the bank wouldnt see anything other than the fact an authorisation request has come through and so they have ring fenced the money. The money hasnt gone anywhere, they are just preventing you from taking it because its been ringfenced

Evidently the whole story sounds a tad on the odd side. Spending £1200 on a holiday and then intending to take £1400 with you in cash transferred into € via sainsburys of all places.

Ultimately, as the bank have said, the ring fencing will drop off. I am sure you can get a few pennies together to cover the first few days and then once the ring fence has dropped off you can withdraw money from the ATM which may well give you a better exchange rate anyway

The poor guy is just stressed out and who can blame him. However that said in my experience if you are polite people will often go the extra mile for you and being aggressive on either side is just a negative emotion and solves nothing.
