  • Wow, times have changed! I'm due in a few weeks and I've been told that, provided there are no problems, I'm out the door after 4 - 6 hours :D

When I had my son they said I could go home 3 hours later
I asked could I stay in and they implied it was better to go home straight away "to relax" properly.

Son is 16 now. No idea where the years in between went!:o

hi..well because she has had a c-section they advise you to stay in hospital for 5 days afterwards..you have to have injections everyday in your tummy to stop clots forming..well i did 3 yrs ago..but then i was discharged early as i was absolutely fine and driving them potty with walking around lol...had to do my own jabs at home..but my SIL just had her first baby via c-section and stayed in 5 days for rest, recovery and monitoring..so maybe its as simple as that.

Blimey, I had my baby nearly 2 years ago by emergency c-section at 7.30pm and they had me up having a shower at 8am the next morning! I also got sent home the day after so only spent 2 nights in hospital. Was my first and I'm old :) did have to have those jabs though, I'd forgotten about them :) I didn't have to do them at home but had to wear those awful compression stockings for about 6 weeks.

You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have.

I know people use forums as a source of information.... but to come on asking total strangers why a family member is in hospital for 5 days .... the mind boggles! It's much the same as asking how long i a piece of string?

this thread has brought back horrible memories. which should have been nice ones. i gave birth for the first time in 1989, i was told i had to stay in for 8 days whether i like it or not, midwifes were unfriendly, matron was a cow. then i got home and my parents kept asking me if 'i'd seen the vicar yet?' they kept on an on and on, as i was unclean. and not supposed to go into other peoples house until i'd seen the vicar, it was dreadful the way i was nagged at. really wish i'd held off for a few years as 5 years later for next baby things seemed to have changed beyond all recogntition and i was booted out after 6 hours! no awful staff and no badgering to 'see the vicar'

sorry my answer dosent really serve a purpose, just that different hospitals have difffernt policies and some are easier to escape from than others, :)

I had my youngest son in 2009, at 8.25am and was back at home for 12.45.

The birth and so called 'care', was the worst experience of my life.

OP, ask the Mother why she's being kept in. If you don't feel that you can ask her, why are you bothered about it?

When I had my first back in 1986 a first time mum was in for 5 days, a c-section 7-10 days and everything else 3 days. We weren't allowed to get out of bed until 6 hours after the birth and all new babies were taken into the nursery on the first night so the mum could get a good night's sleep. All first time mums were taken into a room and shown how to bathe their baby, properly sterilise bottles, make up artificial feed (if you weren't breast-feeding), it was like a lesson in a classroom, they even had lots of baby baths and we were supervised to make sure we were doing it properly! :D

When I had my second baby in 1993 I stayed in overnight but my friend at a different hospital was discharged after 6 hours! I must admit I preferred to stay in hospital for a little while afterwards, I think if you come straight home there's too much pressure or temptation to jump straight back into your normal routine instead of taking time to recover from the birth.
