Ormond St Hospital Prog

I'm just watching a prog on tv about Great Ormond Street hospital and the kids that are patients there.

I can only imagine what some of these families go through and even then I expect I don't get near the depth of feeling.

God love those wee kids who are so very ill and depend on technology and care to simply stay alive. It's not always enough though.

It makes me want to weep. I know it's the way of the world but it seems so wrong for little ones to have to go through so much.

Is anyone else watching?

I am also following this series on Great Ormond Street. I sit here in tears most weeks, just so moved by the childrens plights, the bravery of their families and the tremendous work that all the doctors and nurses do.

It has given me new insight and understanding and puts my life into perspective. I work with a child who Great Ormond Street saved.
The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.

It's a really well made documentary IMHO. It's hard hitting, shows the reality of life and makes the viewer think about the dilemmas people face every day.

It does make me very grateful for my health x

I did wonder about the nurse who commented on the child that had beeen confined to one room all her life. She seemed IMO dismissive of her quality of life - I agree it's not an ideal situation, but she did seem to be a happy child and I don't think it's appropriate to project a judgement like that.

The parents of these children go through a living nightmare, some of them for years without respite. We are so lucky to have facilities such as this in the UK.

It must be so incredibly hard to balance trying to save a childs life with how much a child suffers in order to pull through. I just nearly went into panic on behalf of the nurse that had to 'bag' that tiny child maisie. She was so calm and knew exactly what to do and just did it.

I do so agree with you. There are many countries that would simply not have the technology or expertise that the UK does.

  • I've been following the series too & it's riveting and soooooo revealing (have also been in tears most weeks - the lad last week who'd been in GOSH for a year to build him up for his surgery and then didn't make it .... heartbreaking).

Sure this weeks' will be just as good - have just started to watch so a bit behind you all (and won't read more until I've seen it so I get the "true effect" IYKWIM)

I don't know how I would cope as a parent. My head would be telling me to let my child go but my heart would be screaming to keep trying everything to save her.

I feel so desperately sorry for any parent that has to go through this and every medical professional who has to deal with such a child. I would imagine that for all they are professional, they still have their own emotions to deal with.

It is not an exaggeration to suggest that the uncertainty and sadness are something almost akin to having your NoK on death row. It's like living in a strange parallel universe where everyone else is getting on with their lives, and you have no control over the outcome on someone that you love dearly, and would willingly give your life up for. This is why people turn to religion in these circumstances, what are the practical alternatives when you are desperate?
