1/4 that is is recessive in one parent x the same in the other = 1/16
(1/16)^2 that it happens with both kids = 1/256
~Out of the 4 grandkids, only only one has brown eyes and neither of our hubbies do.
you get a 1 in 2 chance of the recessive allele per parent, and therefore 1 in 4 of being the recessive allele.
However, as each event is independent it's a 1 in 4 chance. it's 25% each time and every time. Just roll of the dice
You can't analyse complex polygenic traits by simple independent events either. And epigenetics, don't forget that. It's the reason why identical twins with identical DNA have subtle differences.

Fairly certain that's not true.

that's about normal for this country. About half the gene copies are blue-eyed and half are brown eyed. Result: about three quarters of the population are brown-eyed and a quarter blue. Unless we prohibit marriages between brown and blue-eyed people it'll stay about that rate!
Years ago it was bout 2/3 of the population were brown-eyed and 1/3 were blue. The apocryphal graph showing the rise of the bicycle alongside the disappearance of the village idiot kind of describes how we got to the new equilibrium. There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -

You know, i have noticed dh's eye colour has changed a little. Mine are just the same. (dh's were green, now they are more...grey)
Young business man, some of our number are scientists or ex scientists. I read a science degree for whoch i had to inderstand some minor genetics (including colour genetics) whch i managed to retain for as long as I though i needed it. The number of people who have no for al education who grasp colour gentics with ease is astounding and i am awed by them.
We had a £40 spend tonight on a curtain rail, but on the plus side we finally have curtains no rat chewed up in our bedroom. And a more than half finished curtain rail. Dh reckoned it would take 45 minutes. He was wrong.
Edit. And actually, now they are up my mothers cream silk curtains dominate the roomwe put the curtain rail just a little higher because of the header on the curtains being quite shallow, which does not help. They look clean and bright and new. Very unlike anything else here!

I am not smart anymore.
Its very frustrating not to rely on one's brain. I think i don't have a sock puppet because i am not smart enough tbh.0 -

If each event is independent and 1 in 4, then the chance of both is 1 in 16. Surely?

Epigenetics will be big in the future. don't worry about it.
What missk is describing is 1/2 chance in one parent and 1/2 in the other, which must be the case in order for any of your generation to be blue-eyed. That gives each of you a 1/4 chance of being blue-eyed, but remember that's always regardless of what previous children's eye colour is.
Any small sample could give freak effects and doesn't mean much, tbh. There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0
