Where is NDG? Has she checked in at all this year?
I went to Warwick Castle a few years ago and was talked into going into the ghost tower thing. Regretted it almost instantly. I get funny about having my back unguarded in scary things like that so had to get my companion to stand right behind me. Was shaking for about half an hour afterwards. Wasn't worried about ghosts, it was enough knowing that people were bound to jump out. Calmed down then went round another bit of the castle which turned out to be full of waxworks. Oops.0 -

Well, what a day!
Started well: DS's last day at primary school. His class did a fabulous "leavers' assembly" based on "The Voice" with various kids dressed up to impersonate members of staff. There were several songs, ending with..
We are the leavers, my friends,
And we'll go on chatting to the end.
We are the leavers,
We are the leavers,
No time for homework
'Cos we are the leavers... of the school.
It went down very well, and DS seemed to be enjoying it.
Fast-forward to the end of the school day. The Y6 mums had arranged a surprise for the class - two limos to pick them up and drive them round town for an hour or so, finishing in the park for a picnic. I was on my way to school when I realised I had forgotten my camera, so I went back from it, and arrived 5 min after the end of school, expecting to have plenty of time since the limos were booked for 15min after the end of school.
I arrived to find the limos already there, all the kids but mine inside and ready to go, and everyone looking for me because DS was in tears and completely unable to cope.
I did know that he doesn't like surprises, but I had hoped it would be OK. I hadn't fully appreciated that...
He doesn't like it when the other children are over-excited and out of control.
He feels unsafe when he doesn't know what's going on.
He hates not knowing whether he has permission to do what everyone else seems to be doing.
Limousines have negative connotations for him since the only time he's been in one was his dad's funeral.
He is terrified of travelling in vehicles that don't have seat-belts. (This is because he knows that he and DD only survived "the accident" because they were belted in.)
The whole "class splitting up and going to different secondary schools" thing is very traumatic to him (because his experiences have made him hyper-sensitive to loss) and doesn't feel to him a cause for celebration at all.
Poor chap, he just wanted to go home, so I took him home, and later we had takeaway quietly just the three of us. By bedtime, although still adamant that he did not want to go to any kind of party of celebration, he was regretting not having said goodbye to everyone, and feeling awful that his final moments with his class had been in tears.
I have known for ages that the transition from primary to secondary school might well be very difficult for him, but for some unaccountable reason I was concerned about how he would cope starting at secondary in Sept rather than on how he would cope with the end of primary right now. How dim is that? He has a problem specifically with loss, not so much with new things. I feel that somehow I ought to have been able to manage the situation better, and am gutted for him that he feels his time with his class has ended on such a miserable note.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -

I am a total scaredycat. I don't know why I did it, but I once went to the Halloween party at Universal Studios. First you smelled the petrol, then you heard the chainsaw. Then some nutter chased you round the garden wearing a mask. I still have petrol-smell related nightmares several years later. Depends if it was deliberately hidden, to return, or lost.0 -
Oh poor ds lydia.
At least you can take heart that some of his fear is logical and life saving (seatbelts, not likeing groups of peers being over excited....a situation that often ends in trouble as they get older)
The only thing that strikes me is while he doesn't want the class to spilt up and move on (loss/change) he is alao losing and changing from the bad apples. I guess admitting change is hard is fair to his intelligence, but only if the point that sometimes their is a silverlining or even pure positive to change is the only support you can give him?
Can he see any friends over summer? A smaller group of people for less manic over excitement?0 -

Now you have one very sad DD .... one OH who hasn't a CLUE what to say and probably wishes you were doing the pickup .... and a whole thread of sad NPs.
spot on PN. She is now happy but I got the the full description of the resort and what went on and now feel bad that we didn't try to get a connection Sunday to fly her out Monday.
I'll do a post about the place..sounded hideous.
I wanted to respond to LJ's post after this about her son not wanting to do what the others are doing as she has often had that from a young age but @ 18 now has the ***** (can't think of right word) maybe self-insight (?) to not do something that she doesn't feel comfortable with (on a social level that is).lostinrates wrote: »ahem, or lothing size. I am too old for my half foot platforms and seetheough tops etc but i am not out of time for some of my clothes. I am obviously coming to terms with it as since w moved i have been lending things o people rather tyhan saving them.:o
I understand what you mean. I popped up to the design centre today for a textile trade fair and bought some prints. I'll show them to you. I recall you loved the marble Dries van Noeten marble silk print so we like similar things.
I'll custom you something for SS 13....PasturesNew wrote: »It's as right as I can find something within the time limits.
It's not about the cost, it's the lack of freedom in a shared/rented place really ... and some other bits/bobs. e.g. couldn't make shiny things there as making shiny things requires a lot of space and makes some muck ... and can involve fire. No space for bike.... to go for a bike ride would involve a 2 mile round trip to collect it from store; not that I'm likely to be wanting to ride in this weather, but it removes the sponteneity potential. Not really feeling 'free' to randomly wander around/outside at 2-3am if I get restless.... people wandering around's a bit creepy for most people.
Sharing with OO, makes it harder.
But it's a nice spot ... and available.
For costs, it's "all in" pricewise, but I have to keep the store on. To have flown solo the rent alone would have cost me £50-100 more, then there'd have been the bills .... so works out more.
Have to see how it goes....
Well, good luck with it...could be a good stop gap until after the summer.
OK gotta go find dooz's post and Lir scanner post now0
