Moving areas on a tight budget isn't easy.

I think I need to just book the cheapest B&B within 20 miles for a week and see how it goes.

I think this is probably a sensible idea - its easier to find somewhere when you're in the area, even in terms of being able to go along for the 'interview'.

I'd like an owner-occupier .... rather than the HMO where the picture of the kitchen showed at LEAST 6 full fridge-freezers lined up against a wall..

And all within budget... of about £450/month tops.

And I've not even got to the point where I contact them and realise that they're "choosing" somebody and I can't just move in. I think I need to just book the cheapest B&B within 20 miles for a week and see how it goes.

there used to be a magazine called "The Lady", that may be the place to look. Where elderly ladies can advertise their spare room. or local newspapers or newsagents windows. I suspect that gumtree may be more for the HMO brigade.

Forget "The Lady", just looked, it is online but not much in the way of classified ads. Unless you want to work for your keep - then there is lots.

I won't be thinking of jobs/interviews until I'm out of a B&B if I go down that route though .... head would be all over the place.

Also, cheapest hotels seem to be in the realms of £1000-1500 for a month....

It's all a bit of a bugg4h really..... moving's not easy is it.

PN - have you tried spareroom.co.uk (you prob have)? It does have houseshares, but I think it also has owner/ occupiers renting out rooms.

Tried that one, then found ERM to be better.... and now on AirBNB (ex crashpadder), but again it's high prices and few choices. Cheapest on AirBNB seem to be about £25/night for a single room, miles from anywhere.

PN, my MIL currently has somebody living with her, but she may be moving out. The deal is that you get to live rent-free (+ a small amount of pay) for the down-side of having to live in the same house as an extremely grumpy old lady who smokes far too much and has a dog. You are not expected to look after her, just keep an eye out for her. I am not suggesting that this is for you, but maybe something similar?
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

The question is where does she generally advertise for her house guests?

There seems to be quite a few of those sort of adverts in The Lady.
