Lords reform is so long overdue. .
Just...... no.
Democracy can be a noble and beautiful thing.
It can also amount to little more than the rule of the mob.
When you look at all the temporarily populist but deeply illiberal measures that various governments have tried to bring in over the years, it has been the Lords that have questioned, delayed, obstructed and become the voice of reason and wisdom and the guardians of liberty.
Only possible because they do not have to answer to an electorate, and so are able to protect society from it's own worst impulses.
We should go back to hereditary peers, a class of people born and bred to inherit the wisdom of generations and act as a check and balance to the madness of crowds.“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.
Belief in myths allows the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.”

I am so glad to see that the political subject of Lords reform is remaining "nice" so far on this thread, on both sides of the debate.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -
Hamish let us discuss the lords on its own thread (tomorrow)
Anyone else think the Olympic Rings on Tower Bridge would look much better if they hung in the centre of the square formed by the bridge deck, towers and walkway (rather than the top) hung on invisible wires?I think....0 -
Sorry, but being particularly contemplative tonight after a nice bottle of red.
You don't let children vote on how to run a nursery class.
Nor do you let lunatics rule the asylum through the power of a majority.
Yet under democracy we allow people uneducated enough and often unintelligent enough to understand the implications of their decisions determine the direction of a nation.
In a way it's madness.
Yet it's also the least worst of the systems we have tried so far.
Very frustrating....“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.

House of Lords should be combined with National Service. Graduates/people who have worked in caring professions without economic vested interests should be conscripted to form an upper house to prevent the bean counters getting it all their own way.
Of course it'll make reading Private Eye less interesting but hey-ho!;)

Do you mean More Takeway Secrets? Only costs a few quid.
I've got the first book but haven't had time to make anything from it! Looks good though.
It's not about cost ... it's also about the fact you need a letterbox/address to receive anything - and know where you're going to be tomorrow/next week/whatever, when it comes.... and there's no point if you don't have a kitchen and can't keep a store cupboard as you're always on the move.0 -
Urgh, late last night i started reading a book with some horrific imagery in it and then stayed awake all night. To day i have to play with a lively toddler in a city centre. I should not huave read the book!0

if anyone is on facebook, they just changed everyone's email addresses on your profile. You might not want your @facebook.com email address.
I use my @facebook.com email address as the main one for Facebook, but have it hidden.
My work one and office number are both public. Office phone goes to mobile, and can be turned off as necessary

The problem is that capitalism only works until you run out of other peoples' money. The government doesn't see this, and it's our money in question!
No only do the Lords need reform, Parliament also needs reform, with the ones that are doing no good to go. Starting with the top, and working down IYSWIM
Communism is the way forward (and I never thought I'd say that)💙💛 💔0
