But the pain of 6 hours on a coach with no toilet was just too much

"Hi Mum and Dad,
Just to give you a quick update on the last week...
Arrived in Cairo on Monday afternoon...
But the negative is people on almost every street corner trying to sell you stuff and the hassle is the worst I've ever experienced. People say Istanbul is bad but it's 1000 times worse than Istanbul. People just won't take no for an answer. It wasn't *as* bad when I went out on my own but I went out with an Aussie girl who looks Western a couple of times and it was just horrendous. Every ten seconds 'hello my friend, want to have tea'.
Even just for me, it was bad. It's a shame because it has so much to see. I was almost mugged in Tahrir Square and basically had to pay to get away...
I get the impression that if there were more tourists Cairo would be okay but because nobody is here, there's a similar amount of pests as there used to be but they're far more persistent. It's tiring...you have to be very alert the whole time to not get scammed."
Glad he's enjoying it! Never been to Cairo, (p and m have, and a friend taught there for a while).
Me and DW had our first holiday in Tangier which sounds very similar regarding hassle. Couldn't have been less like a holiday. Found out later it was the basis for William Burough's fictional land Interzone

Too right. Last one I went to:
Stag do: £300 (admittedly that's because I was best man and had to pay for the stag)
Hotel for wedding: £160
Petrol to wedding: £20
Drinks at wedding: £60
Weddin present £200
And that's one of the cheaper ones I've been to, even taking out the stag do and present it wasn't cheap. I went to one last year which cost me well over £1,000 including the stag, which was a ridiculous 4 day holiday in the algarve...0 -

Sitting here, umable to move, as I am waiting for [a] a delivery a potential "you've done the 'E' thing" call.... although I did risk an outbound call to the EA to chase up the 'E' situation.
Had an early shower so I didn't miss the delivery ... and now daren't move until it turns up.0 -
That's a lovely email GDB.
We have a SIL and her partner staying. They've just back from a tour of Africa. They didn't go to Egypt either.
We packed DS off camping this am on a geography field trip camping. I expect him to get wet!
He went to Old Swinford on Thursday last week for the day. He enjoyed it thoroughly but wasn't impressed by the custard. Oh to be 11!Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

I loved cairo, but that was years, decades even, ago. I remember it smelt terrible though. I was there when lots opf tourists were and to be honest i found them very opreasive.....i hate being pushed and shoved in crowds and groups. But i can see why the lack of them would cause those problems with people being so desperate to sell something relying on a smaller market to sell to.
Goodness, everything is so.....sad.0 -
