we can do a butter vs margarine to see if there is a mushroom bias?

pure butter here although I have started using utterly butterly (as it's a touch cheaper) for baking.

Nobody's made real margarine in the UK for years!;)

Brighton to london, coach from london?

I found £45 super off peak return but there's also the megatrain.

Plus London midland do Lon-BHM for £7 each way sometimes. Last summer they had a half price sale and we could go anywhere from the BHM train station we lived in front of for peanuts.

Edit: there is megabus for £1 from victoria to brum and £6-7 back.

Agree with both those. Do your boys know about the hassle he gives you? If so, I suspect you may find that before long James will decide to give his dad a piece of his mind and explain in no uncertain terms whose fault all of this is. At least, that's what I would guess from the impression I've gathered of him: a young man with plenty of character and a mind of his own, who loves his mum and won't want to sit back and watch her being unfairly blamed. But maybe you've told him that would just make things worse, in which case he'll probably comply with your wishes. Have I guessed right, or am I waaaayyy off the mark???

I was thinking exactly the same. So we can be waaayyy off the mark together.

    On the butter/margarine debate...
Rarely eat a sandwich, if I do I use mayonnaise instead
Use olive oil in cooking, except for burro e salvia sauce which I use butter for.
Use ICBINB light occasionally if I fancy toast or crumpets. I eat toast with marmite and once that's on, you don't really taste what's underneath.
Really, I don't particularly like fatty, oily foods (except for burro e salvia sauce). My weakness is more sweet things.

Omg, six hours? Worth the train prices.

Incidentally, we would be chuffed if our to work ticket for dh was that price:o. Trains are expensive.

Or economical car hire? I'd spend £62.50 to have the car for the weekend too. Would have to be a cheap deal with the price of diesel. With the moneysaving hat on, can you still get a free weekend test drive :)

Which bit of Birmingham are you going to? We need to know if it's worth coming at all!?

Is that splitting the journey? Would she like to come to London or Oxford or even Brighton? I'd rather do my dress shopping in Brighton! Buy her champagne and save the money yourself ;)

You can get first class for about £1 more on sat/sun with "free" stuff so it's worth doing train back.

That's what I'd do, and then pay £10 each way to upgrade to first on the train. Money wasting expert.

    WIN!!!!!!

There is actually a megabus where I live... never used to be, but it's been going 3-5 years now. Although I've never seen it, never read or heard of anybody ever using it .... there's probably a die-hard bunch of surfers in London that use it and it's just for them.
