I would suggest that further testing of the PSU should be done; in fact I wouldn't replace the mobo without replacing the PSU as well.
One of these is a useful tool to have in your kit, they're not infalible, but at least tells you if your getting the 3.3v, 5v, 12v etc. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?VISuperSize&item=220640379268
Where there's burning involved, I find the nose test useful (you may have already done this). Open up the psu once removed from the PC, just 4 more screws, and have a smell, and see if any cables have melted.
How old is the PC, I assume its no longer in warranty from whats gone before?0 -

robmarOse, thanks for the help, the pc is about 3 years old and was custome made with 2 years warrantee. I must say, the smell is of a burnt psu but the smoke was coming fro the opposite side.
I have not been able to take it apart yet because of space shortage, the moment kitchen table becomes vacant, i shall be at it.

An update, disconnected the power supply and reconnected it. when the pc is switched on, some lights come on, it appears psu is working.
I am so nervous about changimg the motherboard, as processor needs to be taken out and refitted, RAM, graphics card and god knows what other parts. is this an easy process??
some help/ encouragement most appreciated.

Taking a cpu out needs patience and care, you bend a pin pulling it out, you snap the pin inserting in the new board,. end of cpu............................**** I hereby relieve MSE of all legal responsibility for my post and assume personal responsible for all posts. Take a couple of CLEAR digital photos first so you can see where everything goes.
Get an A4 sheet of paper and draw on it where each of the screw holes is. As you remove a screw, place it in the correct place on the drawing.
Everything you have to remove/refit is straightforward.
Before starting you need to discharge any static electricity in your body. You can do this by holding onto the metal frame of the computer whilst the mains power lead is still attached and plugged into the wall socket (it does not have to be switched on!)
In many cases you can remove the motherboard with most of the components still in place (add-on graphics card is one notable exception)
Each component will be either screwed in, or it will have metal or plastic clip(s) which you need to release.
Take your time remove each component one-by-one and transfer it to the new mother board, ensuring you insert it the correct way around and the clip(s) lock into place.
Double check everything before reconnecting power and switching on.How do I add a signature?0 -
many thanks 'Figment' I have no other choice but to give it a try, static can kill it.
LincolnsireYorkel tanks for pointing out the critical mistake that can happen.
I will make a video of the whole operation in case i screw up somewere.

Long time ago I accidentally knelt on a CPU I'd just purchased that I'd placed on the carpet (anti-static handling? never heard of it!) during a system build.. Spent several hours with fine-nosed pliers carefully straightening over 100 bent pins. Didn't hold out much hope, but popped it in the socket, fired the machine up and watched in amazement as it worked like a dream! How do I add a signature?0
