    This thread is ridiculous IMHO.

Its entirely a stores descision whether they sell something for a certain price, remove it from sale,or bin it.I also know of one retailer who donated stuff to the homeless, but had to stop doing it,as the STAFF at many of the shelters were taking the stuff home themselves.

With food, the problem comes down to legislation. It is an offence to sell food that is rendered injurious to health, and not of nature substance or quality demanded. The definition of sale includes giving things away for free (even possessing it counts as sale). If tescos do anything other than throw away such food, they are leaving themselves open to prosecution if they give it to someone else and they fall ill from it.

Nothing on there about what happens to all the out of date food they refuse to reduce to clear.

Every day in my local, loads of food is packed into cages rather than being reduced to clear.

Anyone know what happens to it? Staff freebies, homeless, landfill, pigswill?

Stupidity is a trait I try to avoid ;)

Isn't it about time that discussion thread was reopened...?

Never had so many early nights, not the same "need to stay up" in the coupon threads.

I emailed the forum teams, and i know Ben wrote to Martin, but so far nothing, I'm sure we've all cooled down by now.....but now its gone(RandR that is)......theres no ethics to argue about.
    Couponing....."every little hurts"

Half of the people can be part right all of the time, Some of the people can be all right part of the time.
But all the people can't be all right all the time. .........I think Abraham Lincoln said that.

But there IS exactly that. They are going to use the food waste to power the stores through a source of green energy! It does say that on the page ;)

    Quote from the site:
    Ending food waste to landfill

To help tackle the nation's waste problem, we will:

    * set targets to reduce food waste from our stores over the next 12 months
    * stop sending the remaining food waste to landfill. Instead, we'll use environmentally friendly, harder working alternatives like composting and 'anaerobic digestion' - using waste from our stores and farms to generate green energy

And yea, the food is either sold to staff at stupid prices, taken to the staff canteen to be eaten the next day, donated to charity or mostly thrown away and put in the skips. But as the "Plan A" states, the company hopes to stop sending any waste to landfill!

My local has no problem with selling items for 1p (although they have all been non-food items in my experience)

I've always taken them to self service checkouts but there is always a member of staff standing at the terminal who could object anyway :)

I worked for M&S over Christmas last year.

The stuff you see being loaded into the the cages (are you talking about the ones which have trays in?) is from the waste checks, which are done 2 times before close to ensure that there's no out of date stuff left on the shelves.

At my store if it was a weekday, the stuff in there would be sold in the staff waste sale (where you can get stuff that's due to go off today at knock down prices, 75% off) that would take place in the evening after the store had shut to the general public. At the weekends and when there wasn't a waste sale, the stuff was skipped (usually placed in bags and taken down to the bins).

I was told once they DID used to give stuff to the homeless, but stopped because they once got sued or something. Don't know if this was just one of those urban legends or stuff to try and salve my concience as I chucked perfectly good edible food.

Depending on how out of date the items are, they may go to the staff shop if they've got a few days left on them because they've been picked by mistake.

I'm surprised M&S don't reduce anything before close as other supermarkets do.

I don't use TESCO much but:

I just don't understand this thread. Perhaps someone could help me. Why do TESCO have items on the shelf at 1p for customers to take then refuse to sell them at the till? Isn't this a waste of their shelf space?

Also, I've never seen anything at 1p or does it just scan at 1p. Do you find out by chance or are people taking basket loads of stuff to the self scan to check and then putting it back if the price is right

    Please help - totally confused.
