On the subject of out of date food etc..

Many years ago I worked for a branch of Iceland. I dealt mainly with the waste foods like bread and cakes. Our manager was a great guy, and he would put all the waste food like that and leave it out back for the local homeless.

I dont think it was company policy, but neither if us could throw stuff away like that :)

I'm not defending Tesco for not selling 1p products to its customers, but believe the reason they are reduced to 1p is that head office would have arranged a credit from the supplier on the understanding that remaining products are disposed of.
In order to dispose of the products, each store has to waste them. Every store has a waste budget, and it would be unfair to the store for this to come of their budget at full price, thus they are reduced to 1p so this has minimial effect.

A couple of years ago i was duty manager for an express store, and remember this happened when Heinz rebranded their soups. The area manager insisted we binned all old stock, to the extent that he had to be present when we binned them!

Petty.... i know....When i worked at B&Q (seems i've had a lot of jobs!) clearance items that didn't sell, and things like returned pots of paints, etc were put aside for when we had donation request letters from community projects and we gave them away free - and that is B&Q's policy not just the store i worked at.

Perhaps Tesco need to look into the local community and donate these 1p products to deserving causes!!

I got three packs of hairbands for 1p in my local store on Friday, were in the white £1 box so i took one pack to the checkout where it scanned 1p and went back and got 2 more packs there more packs left but I left them there.

But surely it costs tesco money to put things in the bin as in the collection of the items etc...

This from a company whose logo is what ????????????

    Every penny counts

They would rather bin perfectly good, saleable and useable items than donate them to charity, good causes or simply help their loyal shoppers.

Its every little helps and its not a logo.

I don't know how common it is but when I bought a load of beef in gravy (for the points) from Tesco and then wanted to donate it I was told (by the guy at the council) that lots of supermarkets in the (Portsmouth) area donate their out-of-date food. A guy from the council collects it and takes it to local homeless centres etc.

As for why stuff at 1p is binned.... of course it may not exactly be green but it's just economics - they need the shelf space and why would they want to sell you something for a penny that you *might* NEED to buy at full whack.

D'oh - stand corrected on the Tesco tag line, but the principal remains.

Why bin it when it could go to charity?

What *I* don't understand is, if the item has been reduced to 1p, assuming from the central system? Why would they bin them at all? They've obviously been reduced for a reason, so to go into a customers basket and remove the item is OTT isn't it?

I agree with Charlene, why do they bother going to the effort of printing labels, changing the central system if they are "not allowed" to sell these items for 1p. I got reduced bread yesterday for 10p - they were ok about selling that, wasn't poached out of my basket. Why don't they reduce the things to 10p or 50p instead of 1p, people would still be happy to buy these items.
