Selling house: keys for estate agent, how about alarm?

Set the alarm, I would imagine your house insurance reflects this and could be invalid if you are burgled.

I've viewed houses where the EA has turned off the alarm, I don't see the problem.
  • Do you give the estate agent the code for the alarm or the wireless fob?

Personally, i'd want peace of mind on my holidays / trip away and would not want people snooping around whilst I wasn't there. Not sure on how that would effect your home insurance if something was to happen, and you had willingly given your keys to a third party to bring in others to view.

The sensible option...speak to your agent, tell them you are away and to arrange any bookings for dates when you are back and ready to accept viewings. Set your alarm, lock the door, go on your hols and relax.

    Hi

I would change the code of Alarm. Then give the code to the Agent. On your return change the code back to normal code.

Other thing is to give present code to agent and on your return change the code.

The OP is giving them keys, presumably for the agent to do viewings when the OP isn't there ...

If this is the case, what's the difference whether the OP is - at work - out for dinner - picking up the kids from school, or - on holiday?

the question is not clear in itself - has he given keys specifically as he is going on holiday? Or has he given keys to enable viewings when at work, school run, whatever - if this is the case, then does the alarm usually get left off or is it on?

I am presuming he's given keys as he's going on holiday and doesn't want to miss out on any viewings as stated. Also, I presume someone is usually present at viewings, as the alarm issue hasn't been raised before hand.

Set it, give EA a different code and then you can monitor if they actually do the viewings they tell you about, if they do less, or sneak in coz they think you arent there! Will tell you alot!

Most alarms let more than 1 code be used.

This appears to be a common problem..

Had a viewing a while ago, EA opens door.. 10 secs later alarm is going at full blast.

Did not buy the flat. :p

I can't help thinking that you are not serious about selling your house.

Just leave the curtains open - and a ladder so they can climb up to peek through the windows at the bedrooms.

Agents do this all the time....

For peace of mind I would get a family friend or relative to do the viewings - to be the one to unlock and make sure it's all locked back up.

I really wouldn't give an estate agent keys and the alarm code - but that's because I would be paranoid about them not locking up properly.
