This is horrifying. What if that money belonged to an individual? Whilst clearly they have been negligent in inputting the details incorrectly when making a transfer (assuming that it's not a branch keying error), but to go and spend the money, regardless of the motivation is beyond the pail.

Your options are limited, and as you know by now you have acted in a way that is very hard to justify.

If it's a transfer error at the bank it's likely they will just pull the money out, default the account and refer it to collections. If it's from an individual then it's likely that your bank will be in touch - whether the other party goes to the police, or sues is of course up to them.

You need to seek urgent advice on this matter, I know that you had reasons that you thought were just, but what if the intended recipient of the money was someone who was in just as dire need?

With any luck, this will turn out to be a bank error, or a corporate transfer where no harm will come (to others) of your dishonesty. Or, fir the first time I find myself saying this - it's a troll post.

I don't want to be so negative, I often try to encourage people as much as I can in my posts - but there's no positive light to shine here, you've done it now.

This sort of thing does happen occasionally. I went to the bank once to empty my savings account. The woman behind the counter asked what i'd be spending it on and i said 'carpets' (there was supposed to be about £1250 in there) after a million security checks she gave me a form to sign to confirm i was removing the money and it said £454,000!!!!!

Needless to say i was shocked. I told them straight away it was an error and off she whisked to her manager and my account was under investigation.

I got some lovely new carpets though.

Alas the money was returned to the sender a few days later.

How did she propose removing £454,000 in £50 and £20 notes :rotfl:

That's a big branch, I have to notify mine if I want to pull more than £5k! I can't imagine what they'd say if I rocked up and asked for half a million!

5k has been paid into my account, when I realised I transfered it all into a savings account, my house is about to be repossessed so I used all the money to get my family out of trouble with regards to my house being taken away.... but now reality has hit me... can I get arrested for using this money that wasn't mine??
I knew it was an error but we were desperate I have a newborn and a four year old daughter and my husband has left me for another woman, if I do get arrested whats the likely punishment? or will I just have to agree a payment plan with the bank??

I know ive been stupid, but I hope you can appreciate I was desperate!
    THANKS

And the award for best FICTION novel for June 2012 goes to You !! Congratulations.

Astonishing that so many people would reply (in good faith) to such nonsense! LOL

This does happen. My cousin had £300 paid into her account three years ago.
It was not a bank error but had a reference on it being the name of sender. Defiantly not anyone she knew nor was she owed any monies.

So far she has heard nothing, nor did she bring it to the attention of the bank.
    sealed pot chellenger no992Total for 2011= £198

I mentioned on a post about 3 months ago, £5000 I could get away with wondering where it had come from and waiting 6 years for someone to admit to on the company account, but £300 on a personal account? Hardly unusual and hardly suspicious to anyone?!
