I'm surprised that no-one has posted about the broader issues facing the OP...
Help is available elsewhere on this board about:
1. the responsibilities of absent fathers and the process of 'persuading' him to pay maintenance for his children, usually via the CSA;
2. Employment and unemployment, your rights when a job finishes and the various benefits available for those out of work, particularly when dependent children are involved;
3. Housing law and the various steps that a mortgage lender must follow in order to resolve problems before going to court and certainly before obtaining an order for repossession.
Or were those things mentioned simply to try to get sympathetic answers to the question about whether you could keep the money?0 -
Is the OP sure neither her NOR her ex has claimed any PPI refunds?
My refunds from rbs said RBS refund on the statement.
If her ex made a miss selling claim on a joint policy they may well have split the money between them?
It is possible its someone elses PPI refund that was input to the wrong account by the bank. When the other party contacts the bank to chase up (the banks usually say to allow 28 days for the refund-so in around 3 or 4 wks) they will probably discover the error. But in the first instance they will contact the OP to ask for the money back, at that point she could negotiate a repayment plan. I wonder if the mort is with the same bank? As it was used to clear arrs on that perhaps they would accept an ectention on the mortgage.
I think going to see CAB may help.
Another thought is could this be something to do with a redundancy claim? Did she have some kind of insurance they may have finally paid out?
Otherwise you need to maximise your income, make sure tax credits etc know your situation and claim all the benefits you are due. Also if not already done you need to contact CSA, your ex may want to just walk away from his kids, but he can't just walk away from the responsibilities.
Good Luck

Their solicitor won't know that until the legal action that might be necessary to get the identity has been taken.Their solicitor should advise them not to sue anybody who can't pay.
"on my bank statement the banks name and then the refund sign" suggests to me that the bank is going to be very interested in getting its own money back.If it wasn't the bank's mistake, the bank won't be interested. They won't reimburse the other guy and they won't act as collecting agent.
Whether it would do so for another person would depend in part on the value of the other customer. Banks certainly have acted as intermediaries in cases like this. The FOS has also ordered a bank to repay the customer paying the money even where that customer got the account number wrong, as in FOS case 87/04. In this situation the bank can be expected to be quite keen to get back its money from the person who received the money.0 -

Her first priority is to contact the bank and then deal with the broader issues afterwards.0 -

I was actually doubting that it would happen.... Naturally my sympathies do go out to any others in the same or similar position regardless of age, family size and home circumstance. There howzat?
