I was actually doubting that it would happen.... Naturally my sympathies do go out to any others in the same or similar position regardless of age, family size and home circumstance. There howzat? ;)
You can be repossessed for exceeding two months arrears.

It's more than possible to lose your home for £5k in missed payments.

Wow, some of you people are so judgmental, the prospect of losing my house with two very young children would terrify me into doing the same thing OP. The people who are insulting youu were probably born with a silver spoon in their mouth with no grasp on the harsh reality of life as a struggling single mum. If you do get in trouble no judge in there right mind would send you to jail! These people are deluded try not to worry, but do contact the bank and rectIfy the situation but don't feel bad most would do the same thing. Your childrens well being comes first you were just being a parent!!

Not being funny, but, assuming for a moment the thread is genuine, isn't the OP asking people to make a judgement on what she should do?
the prospect of losing my house with two very young children would terrify me into doing the same thing OP.
And that would make you a thief. Selling up and asking the local authority to prioritise your need for housing would be another option.
The people who are insulting youu were probably born with a silver spoon in their mouth with no grasp on the harsh reality of life as a struggling single mum.
While I haven't noticed a wide range of insults your comments appear to try to justify theft. Many single Mums struggle. I'd hazard a guess that the vast majority don't steal £5,000 that they know isn't theirs to keep. I actually find your post insulting to the honest and hard working single mothers of this world.
If you do get in trouble no judge in there right mind would send you to jail!
A prison sentence is a genuine possibility. The defence would be right to mitigate the situation with a plea for a lenient sentence. But you don't know the OPs genuine circumstances. You don't know her criminal history. And you don't know how bored an individual judge will be hearing yet another sob story from a thief on that day in court.
These people are deluded try not to worry, but do contact the bank and rectIfy the situation but don't feel bad most would do the same thing. Your childrens well being comes first you were just being a parent!!
Wouldn't most parents teach their kids to be honest?

OK so we all do stupid and reckless things when we are desperate! This wont be the first time the bank have heard of this situation.

Call them anonymously first and ask for advice but I am pretty sure they will understand the circumstances and if you admit this is a mistake I am sure they will set-up a payment plan to repay the money.

    Now who's being judgmental

I'm a single mum with two children, i grew up on a council estate, my mum was a single mum (my dad died when i was young) she also struggled to bring up me and my 3 brothers. BUT, never in a million years would i do what the OP did, and neither would any of my family and friends.

"just being a parent" doesn't mean taking something that doesn't belong to you, being a parent means being a grown up, and a grown up who knows right from wrong, so that you can set an example to your children.

I think you'll find that most single parents would NOT do what the OP did, you are so wrong, you are the deluded one i'm afraid.

This is awesome. So it's fine for people worse off than you to come and take your stuff?

I know a couple of homeless guys, give me your address - next time you are out you will come home to a couple of squatters. It doesn't matter that it's against the law does it? I am sure you'll understand since they are worse off than you.

Back in reality, taking something that is not yours is wrong and giving your children a sense of entitlement just because you are hard up is not a good life lesson we should be giving our children.

Sarah-Reddy where are you. Perhaps as others have commented you were just a low life troll looking for some form of cheap entertainment.

However if this is not the the case and you are genuine perhaps an update would be good.

This sort of thing does happen occasionally. I went to the bank once to empty my savings account. The woman behind the counter asked what i'd be spending it on and i said 'carpets' (there was supposed to be about £1250 in there) after a million security checks she gave me a form to sign to confirm i was removing the money and it said £454,000!!!!!

Needless to say i was shocked. I told them straight away it was an error and off she whisked to her manager and my account was under investigation.

I got some lovely new carpets though.

Alas the money was returned to the sender a few days later.
