Based on my experience with them (nearly 30 years), they are somewhat better than the average High Street bank, although not quite as good as they used to be! Have never had any real problems when dealing with them, either by 'phone or in branch (based on two different branches). Their online site is easy to use and you quickly get used to using the cardreader, which is there to protect both them and the customer.

They are one of two banks I've asked in the past to refund incorrectly paid out direct debits. Nationwide are the only ones who were:
    1. Happy to take my instructions by online messaging
    2. Paid the money back with no fuss.

They didn't do it over night but compared to the resistance put up by the other bank they did it very quickly.

Oh and the worse service I've received from them was from a branch manager. There in other banks the counter staff are the ones who tell the imply untruths to stop you doing something backed by their branch manager.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)

I, too, agree with 'innovate', especially about the branch members and their 'foul mood' bits, as I have experienced this first hand. Hated the card reader thing and ditched them about 18 months ago after I joined them to avail of a £150 switching incentive bonus....
