Being a "good sensible driver" isn't about getting used to be being overtaken. Statistically those who drive faster than average (at the 85th percentile speed) are the drivers who have the fewest accidents. Slow drivers are just as dangerous as extremely fast drivers - in many ways more dangerous as they cause other drivers to take risks to pass them.

Where's the research they keep referring to e.g. on crash risk vs speed? Safe Speed are not a credible organisation.

No, slow drivers don't 'cause' other drivers to take risks. The other drivers cause themselves to take risks by being impatient and driving dangerously. It's just an excuse thought up by people with no patience who think that their journey is far more important than anyone elses.

Who is to blame doesn't really make much odds to the poor sod coming the other way though does it?

That said, subject to certain legal restrictions you can pretty much drive as slow as you want and other drivers should deal with that in a calm and controlled manner.

Problem is, there's a lot of idiots out there, and driving slowly doesn't half provoke them.

The person being berated here has stated that they're absolutely fine with being overtaken, and has given a valid reason for going slowly over speed bumps (anyone who has seen the hideous costs of mobility equipment isn't going to want to risk damaging that ramp!) so some of the hassle here seems a little bit unfair.

Save it for the 40mph everywhere plonkers and the people who speed up and/or pull over to block overtakers!

I had to drive slowly to avoid my wheel falling off at one point. It was pitch black and there was nowhere safe to pull over, so I drove slowly with my hazards on until there was a safe place to pull in. The idiots behind kept flashing and beeping at me in their haste to go faster, roaring past when I did pull in. Some people don't stop to think why the car in front is going slowly.

We have a main road out the back of our house with width restrictions on it to stop industrial traffic from using it to access the nearby trading estate.

    2 problems..

Vans still try to go through and regularly hold up the traffic while they either inch through really slowly or attempt a 65 point turn in the road.

The boy racer nobs with stupid dump valves and loud exhausts inch through really slowly then floor it to the next width restriction, meaning you get the roar of the exhaust and the woosh of the dump valve before they slam the brakes on (sometimes locking up and skidding)

Personally, I'd prefer them not to be there and put up with the odd lorry going by..
    Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently! ;)

You can't make DIY changes to a road. a) it is not your property b) you open yourself up to a whole raft of litigation regarding damage to cars or if there are accidents injury to persons.

I sympathise, but DIY is not the answer.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/8415351.stm - quick google search regarding accident blackspots

After local council, try police liaison/traffic officers to implement a speeding crackdown

Well yes you can't just go out and DIY it, however you could theoretically seek Road Construction Consent which is used for private companies to make changes to public roads. Never heard of it being used for such a purpose, however I have seen it done when a developer has been asked to put in traffic calming due to new homes being built.

We really have tried with the council and local councillors.

Our councillor is actually the one who organised the petition and got us an interview and a photo with her in it!, in the local paper.

This was last year and she brought it up at whatever meeting she next went to, all to no avail. All neighbours are on board, so i guess a multi-letter-writing effort is the next stage.

It's just so frustrating when we would now pay ourselves for something to be put in the road, but still they say no.

    Thanks for the replies.

It is a good start with the councillor being on board however often traffic calming isn't really what people want when it is down. I've just seen a hump ripped up after a year. Equally I know places campaigning for road humps for 5+ years. You have to consult with all the emergency services and bus companies. If one of them objects, usually game over. There is usually a public consultation too.

Speed bumps are the work of the devil (as are all so called traffic 'calming' measures)

Yup, and fatalities are the work of the lord above!
