And if any of you are the mindless pratts that overtake me when I crawl of these illegal speed humps shame on you, open your eyes and you will see why Im going so slow.
Why would you care if people overtake you? You want to take the bump slowly, they want to go quicker so pass you. I never understand why people get annoyed at being overtaken!

Friend of mine and his neighbours campaigned for years to get speed bumps on their stretch of road.

    Eventually the succeeded.

Less than a month later they were campaigning for their removal. They stopped motorists speeding but introduced a more irritating and unforeseen problem. It seems that many drivers slow down for the bumps but then floor the accelerator while in second gear and race to the next one then slow for the bump and repeat.

It's particularly noisy when the vehicle in question is a diesel, particularly vans.

Worse than that though are the lorries, in particular lorries carrying empty containers driving through the night towards Felixtowe port. It seems that they don't slow down much at all and make a hell of a racket when they bounce over the speed bumps.

I have to confess to being amused at their about face after so many years of self righteous outrage about speeding drivers. Better yet after years of telling them the humps weren't necessary the council also did a complete about face and decided that they were essential.

    You couldn't make it up.
One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.

How about this for something a bit more off the wall.

Get a life-sized print out done of a police-man holding a speed-gun and tie it to a lamp-post near your house. Hopefully it will be "good enough" at 100 metres away to scare people into braking. Strategically staple on a reflective jacket for extra effect at night.

    Worth a shot?

I can't understand why anyone would campaign for speed bumps on the road where they live for all the reasons already given but also because it must have an impact on the value of the house. I personally would never ever buy a house on a road with speed bumps.

Excellent idea. Or a fake speed camera.

I wonder if that photo is the OP's car?

I though it was illegal to park closer than 30ft to a junction. Or is my old brain going?

If you mean the photo of the blue Peugeot MPV I posted then, no, that's one I found using Google and used to illustrate my question as I wasn't able to describe clearly what I wanted to ask.

That will fool the local chavs once or twice, then they'll figure it out and the next time they're down that way they'll deliberately be as noisy and obnoxious as possible, or maybe they'll just set it on fire and key any cars parked near it.

I was just wondering if you cant get a CCTV type camera you can discretely setup in a window from your house that could record the number plates of anyone driving dangerously? For every crash there have probably been 10 near-misses.

It would given evidence at least which you can take to the police, or if you cant get number plates you can take it to the council and show them how badly people are driving?

Might be quite expensive to pick up number plates at distance more than a few metres.

I imagine, however, the council won't take action until someone is killed or seriously injured.

Im a good sensible driver so Im used to getting overtaken, it dosnt bother me in the least but when they decide to do is dangerously it should be a problem for everyone.

Im was going slowly enough not to be bothered by the pillock who over took me as I went over the bumps in my home village today but the on coming car wasnt going as slow because they didnt need to, her face was a frozen mask of horror and she was terrified when it wasnt her fault (shes a friend who I saw again when I dropped my family back at the family home)

Being a "good sensible driver" isn't about getting used to be being overtaken. Statistically those who drive faster than average (at the 85th percentile speed) are the drivers who have the fewest accidents. Slow drivers are just as dangerous as extremely fast drivers - in many ways more dangerous as they cause other drivers to take risks to pass them.
