Help Windows XP Update repeating

Well I just used some of my excessive brain power and I've now managed to successfully install the updates, with no repeat download and install yellow shield coming back at me.

Also I checked back on Windows Updates and now no High Priority updates - whereas before all 3 were still there.

What I did? Right-clicked my antivirus (AVG) and clicked Temporarily disable for 10 minutes.

Then I clicked the yellow shield and installed, then turned off (allowing the deeper install)... and when computer turned back on... all ok.

Hopefully similar action it might work for others here. I'm thinking my antivirus (AVG) was treating the update as a root-kit type of threat, and preventing the install.

Here's what worked for me. Whether each of these steps are required in the order I did them or not - I don't know - but it worked for me.

I downloaded each of the updates in Post #15

I then installed each one, in turn, in chronological order, following the software update prompts then rebooting between each one, choosing the option to "Turn off without installing updates"

I then ran the MSfixit here, choosing the aggressive option, then rebooted.

No more WU prompts for updates to install.

YES switching off Windows Firewall worked here , so far, no yellow shield now, but when I switched off still said "click here for updates or click here to not download updates."
    Checked Windows Update, none waiting.

ps. Switch off panel back to normal. Standby, Turn Off, Restart.
    Still no Yellow shield.

Forgot to mention - try turning off your anti-virus and/or firewall before doing the updates. It's worked for me.

    :T Thankyou

    It's worked for me! :j

There's a chance that MS have realised the problem rectified it in the meantime.

The updates were released in October last year and there were problems then. And it was failing up to 5 minutes before I successfully did the successful update. Guess I was just lucky.

I suspect you're correct, mine seems OK now.

This bulletin involving all the previously posted updates was revised today.

There was a problem earlier with that that has now been fixed.

The workarounds posted here coincided with MS rectifying it.

First: My yellow shield has gone. Nothing to do with me because it disappeared off both my computers and one of them I was not fiddling with.

A bit off the orginal thread but in trying to solve this problem, going through all the microsoft help links, they eventually recommended that I did a virus check. I have F-secure running all the time so did not expect anything to turn up, but they said to use Microsoft's free safety scanner. at

    http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-gb/default.aspx

Its been running now for 5 hours and is currently saying I have 5 infected files. F-secure does not find these! I have to wait till it ends to find out what they are. Scary!!
