No, they don't pay the VAT for you. It's your responsibility to fill out a P86 each year. The VAT receipt is so they can see your fillup information and correlate average usage to spot fiddlers on expenses. However, you should certainly be keeping copies for yourself and a spreadsheet showing dates, mileage, amounts paid and amount received from your employer. It will make it easier to fill out the forms at the end of the year.

Before starting this job (2 yrs ago) i never claimed petrol. Now i do it's funny they never mentioned it in the interview! is this p86 thing widely known about? i always keep a copy of what i've sent to payroll but not the reciepts as they need the originals sent over. You mentioned at the end of the tax year, does this mean i have to wait until next April to do it?

Hi, i do this as i have to submit my mileage forms and VAT reciepts to work every month to get paid. Does this mean they pay me back the VAT do you think (seeing as i have to send vat reciepts in?)

Your company will have claimed the vat, make no mistake.

Thats why they, want the vat receipts

Well, I wouldnt say 'widely known' but there is plenty of information about it if you search. I've met many colleagues who do business mileage, but didn't know about this and as many who did, so I have no way of telling for sure. Also, if you're doing business mileage, you do realise that you need business insurance on your car? I think there's also the opportunity to write off against tax if you purchase a car that's being used for business...something to do with the HP payments I think, but I'm not sure. You should speak to a friendly accountant.

As for filling out the P86, yes, you'll need to file it about the time you get your P60 next year. Although, it's only the beginning of the tax year, you might be able to slip one in for this year if youre quick.

If your company require original receipts, you have a right to photocopy them for your records. You can fit a weeks worth on a single sheet of A4 and that's what I try to do.

    Doh...dyslexia strikes...sorry

    It's a P87...

    See this : http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/incometax/how-to-get.htm

Also looks like you can still claim for last year, so I'd dig those receipts and paperwork out tonight and have at it....

Not necessarily. Have you had your p60?

I can't vouch for what will happen in your situation. I have enough trouble working my own out. I have help from a specialist charity which deals with tax matters, so i get all my information from them, but you could try ringing hmrc as the first port of call.
