They think it's unlucky angelcake
I wouldn't have a bird in my house for instance - it's just a superstition that was passed on to me.
I'll have to look it up on Google sometime

Superstitions amuse me especially when you trace back why it is supposed to be unlucky.
My mother in law always used to be paraoid about people putting new shoes on the table, as 'everyone knew it was unlucky'. The reason..in the old days (Very old days, pre real state benefits) benefits were means tested and if you were caught with a new pair of shoes in full view, like on a table, you lost your benefits.
The cockerel one apparently is a pseudo religious one to do with the fact that Peter Betrayed Jesus after the cockerel was heard to crow. However, it is the bird itself that is deemed to be unlucky, not just because it is in the house, which must be unfortunate if you are a hen <smile>.
However, a quick Google search actually overturns the superstition about Cockerels being unlucky, indeed it seems that they are a very lucky bird and ward off the evil eye. Check out:

Thanks for clearing that up Soo

I knew about the shoes on the table (I'd never put them there), but not why.
We were also told never to store them above head height (probably in case they fell on your head
)
But the cockerel story's enlightening. I presumed it was all birds. Well it is up here anyway
I'd also never be the one to reply after 110 posts or bids (if that ever happens lol), because the number after it's supposed to be unlucky too. Something to do with cricket I think.
My life's ruled by superstitions
