checkatrade.com is good, I found a very good fence company through them.
Hi Daisy, I need a fencer, don't suppose your one is anywhere near Herts/Essex/N London area?Less stuff, more life, love, laughter and cats!
Even if I'm on the shopping threads, it doesn't mean I'm buying! Sometimes it's good to just look and then hit the CLOSE button!0 -
Having had an extension built in 2010 - I cannot emphasis enough the importance of checking out the builders company. Probably as even small extensions, loft conversions, conservatorys etc will cost several thousand pounds, it's worth paying £18 or £20 to check out their company (probably they will be Limited). For free suggestions on checking director's details I've some tips on my new website reunitednow.com
Also you may like to...
1. The obvious thing to look for is has the boss of the building company been a director of several companies? 2. Has the company a trading history of at least a few years? 3. Never pay any money up front, though be prepared to pay in stages for the build (foundations first). 4. Some websites will show if the director has county court judgements. 5. Try googleing the company or builders to see if their are any bad reviews.
Apologies if these tips appear in other threads.

I've struggled to get tradesmen out recently. My biggest gripe is about the people who tell you they will be out on x day and don't show up and are never heard of again. If you are too busy, say so!
I thought I had a builder sorted for work last summer but he verbally quoted us £1500 for a job and then sent a written quote of £2000 for the same job. We asked for a more detailed breakdown of the work as there were also some things quoted for that we hadn't discussed and he sent the same documnet back out. We didn't use him in the end as we didn't trust him anymore although I'm sure he was a good builder.
We're in the process of using a building firm that had recs on a website. I hope they are good as we have tonnes to do in the next few years and would love to have a 'go to' builder to do it.Stercus accidit0 -
There are good ones out there and there are a few bad ones, it's unfortunate for all the trades that 1 rotten apple gets TV exposure every now and then, and tarnishes the whole industry, but at least it alerts folks to do as previous posters have suggested. And please, if you can go for someone local, then if it goes wrong you have a door to knock on,I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0
