New laptop - what makes to avoid?
Comments

Hi all,
I'll be buying a new laptop in the next few days and, having been burned by HP previously, would like to know who's currently got a rep for making sub-standard machines. So what make(s) would you avoid and only recommend to your arch enemy?

The ones that I've used and haven't caused any trouble are:
Asus
Sony and
Apple.
Hope this helps.0 -
Apple has never manufactured a 12" Macbook – in white or any other colour.

That’s an iBook not a Macbook. It's a completely different laptop with a fundamentally different processor.
Apple stopped making those in 2005. So, it’s at least seven years old and – as you write and as you illustrate – it’s still working and clearly in good condition.
So, how come you defame Apple’s build quality?C_Mababejive wrote: »

“Whatever” seems to be your general attitude and your unconcerned reaction whenever you are confronted with your perpetual errors and inaccuracies.

I had a quick look through my CRM databse to get an idea of the kind of repairs I've had to carry out, over the last 12 months, on laptops between 2 - 5 years old.
Acer - I've had a bunch of Acer's in but only 1 that was a hardware problem. The screen had been broken through accidental misuse (closing the lid from the corner)
Advent - Only had 3 of these in. All had suffered cracking to the upper lid plastics in and around the hinge area.
Apple - Built like tanks but I had to stop supporting the hardware as it was no longer cost effective to carry out repairs or upgrades.
Dell - The newer models have all been keyboard replacements (specifically the Inspiron 15xx range) and DC jack problems (the hexagonal socket in which the inner plastic piece has snapped off). There was 1 screen replacement but this appears to have been accidental misuse (someone dropped something weighty on the lid)
HP - No repairs but numerous services due to overheating.
Toshiba - Screen replacements and 1 HDD replacement. At first glance they seem unrelated but in all cases it was reported that the customer first notice cracking in the plastics in or around the area a component had failed. In the case of the HDD the laptop was dropped a short distance onto a table. The plastic framework had broken and the HDD had become loose in the system. Head/Platter damage was the result. I had to repair the plastics with epoxy.
The only thing the above list indicates is that those are the faults I see most often in those machines. It may simply mean those machines are more popular with my customers. If all my customers bought Dell then obviously I would only see Dell errors.
If I've not included a manufacturer it's because I've not had hardware calls and I've only included my comment on Apple machines because I do get asked to "look at" them often. I didn't think it fair to lump them in with manufacturers I don't receive calls for when the only reason there are no listings for them is because I can't justify working on them.
I have also neglected to mention Lenovos of which I have provided regular business support for at least 20 going back over 12 months. The only hardware work carried out was a service on a machine that has scraped in to the 2 - 5 year criteria by days.0 -

Are you for real?
I've wracked my brains and i cant think of anyone that I have any real obligation to least of all an internet forum !:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Quite so. But the burning question here is whether or not the OP could credibly recommend a Sinclair ZX-80 to one of his/her arch enemies. :think:Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance

Oh yes, I'm for real. And, self-evidently, the one brain I have works a great deal better than all of yours put together.
I'm sure your "partner", whether dressed or undressed, and even if she was never bright enough to work out how to import photographs from her camera on to an iBook
will be delighted to learn that. even with all your multi-module cerebral equipment, you "cant (sic) think of anyone that you have any real obligation to".
For that remark, some might conclude that you are a fe¢kless $h1t as well as an error-laden poster. (But not, I, of course: I would never breach MSE Forum Etiquette, myself, however great the temptation.)
I think that all things considered, most users would consider that it is you who is the arrogant sad !!!!er with mental health problems and you can report that if you like !Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Out of courtesy to the OP, please do not pollute this thread with the names of computer manufacturers whose products you favour, nor give your reasons why.
The OP, who appears to have enemies – some of which are “arch” – and to be of a uncharitably vengeful nature, has made it forcefully clear that s/he is only interested in the names of manufacturers whose laptop products s/he would recommend to his/her foes out of spite.
The names of companies which manufacture good computers, and whom the rest of us would recommend to our friends, are unwelcome to the OP, and so is any reasoning you are minded to add for those you choose to nominate.
Indeed, this has been emphasised by the OP. :wall:
So, to indulge the OP, please restrict your nominations to manufacturers of badly built computers and refrain from giving any explanations for your choices.
You have been asked firmly by the OP to share his/her profound negativity, not to be positive. (It’s an Aberdonian trait, for which the weather, there, is much to blame.)
