on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0 -
Thank you. Thats very interesting - second time I've seen Tosh so high which puzzles me a bit. It is broadly helpful, but statistics can be misleading; ie this report is not just hardware prbsRescuecom defines reliability as the physical reliability of the computers plus the after the sale computer support of the manufacturers.0

Secondly we don't get any breakdown, eg cheap retail vs high-end or business. What would be really useful is a breakdown sub £400 vs the rest?
this is true hence why i put the links so people can make their own mind up about the validity of those stats,
unfortunatly i dont know of any reports which show enough details to make a proper conclusion (also i doubt any company will publish full details if it shows them in a bad light), so in reality its probably the best we can get at the moment
on the flip side it is interesting in as you say not just hardware problems but software, as when you think about someone like Apple, who are very good at keeping things within their own ecosystem, to have that many calls to a third part helpdesk does make you wonder what the real figure actually is, compared against someone like dell whos customer support is not generally thought of very highly and who who people might resort quicker to a third party helper than would be normal.
as ever though take everything with a pinch of salt and accept we will not liekly ever know what the full picture is for any company as its generally not in the companys best interest to let people know how much their stuff breaksDrop a brand challenge

Reasonably priced and well reviewed - look at the comments at the bottom of the page which give you food for thought. I am not recommending this laptop but this is the sort of place where you can do your research.
IMHO - its best to buy a laptop that is about a year old so has been tested in the "field...." and has a TWO year warranty - if there is a design fault (usually overheating) it usually appear after a years use.
If I had the money, however, it would be Apple any day of the week....0 -
For the love of god, avoid Dell.
had 3 of their laptops, last one was the XPS 15.
Most expensive laptop I've had from them as well, cost me £800.
After 3 months the mobo had to be replaced for overheating.
Within the first year it had to be replaced another two times.
Last time it commited was just before xmas (litterally days before warranty was up), and so when I got it back in the new year, Dell had fitted half the ram, and a slower hard drive in it.
And that's why I'm never buying from them again.- David0 -
Out of courtesy to the OP, please do not pollute this thread with the names of computer manufacturers whose products you favour, nor give your reasons why.
The OP, who appears to have enemies – some of which are “arch” – and to be of a uncharitably vengeful nature, has made it forcefully clear that s/he is only interested in the names of manufacturers whose laptop products s/he would recommend to his/her foes out of spite.
The names of companies which manufacture good computers, and whom the rest of us would recommend to our friends, are unwelcome to the OP, and so is any reasoning you are minded to add for those you choose to nominate.
I didn't ask why people wouldn't recommend a manufacturer just which one's they'd only advise their arch enemy to buy.
Indeed, this has been emphasised by the OP. :wall:
I think you'll find I asked what manufacturers people would avoid and not for a general debate.
So, to indulge the OP, please restrict your nominations to manufacturers of badly built computers and refrain from giving any explanations for your choices.
You have been asked firmly by the OP to share his/her profound negativity, not to be positive. (It’s an Aberdonian trait, for which the weather, there, is much to blame.)Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance

Sigh, give it a rest will you? You're like a small child throwing a hissy fit because they lost an argument. All you're doing is making yourself look stupid and wasting everyone else's time.0 -
Interested to see the reliability report. Just for the record i have a tosh A210-12U lappy as detailed here..
http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/jsp/SUPPORTSECTION/discontinuedProductPage.do?service=UK&com.broadvision.session.new=Yes&PRODUCT_ID=132293
As shown it is discontinued. Thats because its about 5 years old now. I paid about £350 new from john Lewis so got two years warranty. Never needed it as its still going strong. It is never turned off. It has been set up for a few years to dual boot its original OS and Ubuntu linux. In truth its 99% used exclusively in linux now.
My partner bought the little 12" macbook in white about four years ago. After years of struggle, she couldnt live with it and has now switched to a new toshiba lappy. The other night she made a loud exclamation of joy. She was still dressed at the time but had managed to plug her new camera into it AND find all her new photos at the same time ! Something which had previously eluded her with the little mac.
The little mac still does work by the way.
I didnt mean to launch WW3 over something so trivial.
As stated,my thoughts and views are worth no more or no less than anyone elses. I merely recount my own experiences.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0 -

Not at all: quite the reverse. I’m trying to prevent everyone else wasting their time by providing you with information that you have stated and emphasised (with a considerable lack of appreciation and grace) that you don’t want.
I used your own words to do it and you don’t like being confronted with them. You’re the one who’s throwing “a hissy fit” because of it.
But fear not; I have better things to do than pursue any debate with a rude pessimist in whose opinion of me they are arrogant and foolish enough to presume I am remotely interested.
