I know apple vs microsoft is a heatedly debated topic but could I respectfully ask you don't do it in this thread. I have notifications switched on and don't wish to get hundreds of emails just because this has turned into an argument instead of the original intent.
Thanks
Kindly don’t poke your finger at me for what I wrote.
You started a thread about the build quality of laptop manufacturers.
C_Mababejive posted “Avoid Apple…”
I asked him/her why (since s/he gave no reasons for this “advice”).
I then referred him/her (by means of a link) to an excellently reasoned posting by Notmyrealname this very morning which extolled in detail the build quality of Apple computers.
That posting and mine are totally relevant to your chosen topic of which manufacturers to avoid on grounds of build quality.
All the postings to your thread (except your own) have been about hardware and build quality.
Nobody but you has brought software and Microsoft into it.
By all means do so if you now want to go off-topic on your own thread, but leave me out of your complaints.
Apple’s build quality is excellent and it certainly does not warrant inclusion in a list of hardware manufacturers with “a reputation for making sub-standard machines”.

I think you'll find I asked what manufacturers people would avoid and not for a general debate. C_Mababejive gave his opinion like everyone else which I may or may not agree with. The reason for starting this thread was to get suggestions so I can have a rough idea who I should be looking very closely at in my research. After all it's my money ultimately paying for the laptop and me who will be using it. By the way, I quoted you because you were the first to wade inI asked him/her why (since s/he gave no reasons for this “advice”).

Except I didn't ask why people wouldn't recommend a manufacturer just which one's they'd only advise their arch enemy to buy. As previously stated I'll take the information from here and do my own research. I've been on MSE long enough to know that most information is useful but some not so much and therefore it's wise to make your own informed decisionAll the postings to your thread (except your own) have been about hardware and build quality.

This is a fair point and I apologise. But I'm also fairly certain you all knew what I meant when I respectfully asked for this thread not to be turned into a debate. Course I've done it myself now by responding to you but hey hoBy all means do so if you now want to go off-topic on your own thread, but leave me out of your complaints.

Which is your opinion and if I ever start a thread titled which manufacturer would you recommend and why you are welcome to state so. In the mean time if you want to go off topic and get involved in endless arguments can I suggest you visit discussion time in the arms? It's where we usually debate things on MSEWhen you get your tartan untwisted you owe me an apology.
I've apologised for my mistake. Hopefully you will apologise for yours.0 -
Not quite the question the OP was asking but here's my two penneth worth:
Over the last 20 years, I was getting increasingly hacked off with Microsoft's operating system. Endlessly chasing my tail buying more and more powerful machinery to run an increasingly cumbersome and sluggish programme.
The final(ish) straw came when my 11 month old Fujitsu laptop (i5 processor) was taking four and a half minutes to fire up from cold.
I have played around with the Linux OS a bit in the past and although it required more techie abilities than I was prepared to invest it made me think "life's too short to stick with a Microsoft operating system".
Anyhow, I got an Apple Macbook Air just prior to Christmas (my first Mac and to be fair I was pretty sceptical about the benefits). However, after about 2/3 months of getting used to the different operating system I am very pleased with the Mac (in truth, I am not sure that I would voluntary go back to anything running a Microsoft o/s).
Each to his own, but for me the main benefits include:- 20 seconds start up time
- 4/5 hour battery life
- quality of screen and hardware
- Safari
......although I did get Office for MACs (Excel, Word and Powerpoint) which was about £80 for a three user family pack.0 -
Your reply is unnecessary, and is not justified - you should have more respect for yourself.
Agreed! well said.
:rotfl:
I have been accused of many things on MSE but I suspect that few of my detractors share your opinion that I suffer from a deficiency of respect for myself.
I am not, however, going to go off-topic to debate it.
Let us just be happy that robmar0se was delighted to be told by the OP that the OP was not interested in the reasons that robmar0se kindly took the trouble to give as to why robmar0se nominated the computer manufacturers that s/he did. _party_
That, in my supremely humble opinion, shows a real lack of respect for oneself.Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance

Back on the primary subject - Dell used to be great little laptops but they can now be bought almost anywhere and appear to be more cheaply made than they were previously. I liked my Dell, it lasted me 5 years, but I would not buy another one.
Normally I would say avoid Acer but my daughter has had one for about 3 years and it has had no problems
I personally have a Sony and am very pleased with it, it has been going 2 years and has no problems, but then I have really looked after it - it is worth taking into account if you are capable of keeping all the muck off it and looking after it, if you are then you might get away with a cheaper one. What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0 -
Here's a piece of good advice:
Try Amazon Warehouse for bargains.
Here is an old MSE thread from when I was looking:
https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3551717
They will be returns or refurbs and may be last year's model.
Unless you want a flying machine (to play high end games or lots of video editing), you don't need today's top end models anyway.
It may take a couple of weeks to spot a bargain, but they do appear.
If you end up with a duff one, returns are free and you have upto 30 days to test before returning.
I am currently typing on a 17" HP DV7-3101SA, which cost me £200 and was unmarked (apart from a tiny flaw in a speaker cover) and unused.
The best £200 I've ever spent IMO.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0
