It just upsets me that these youngsters that need a car to get to work, uni etc are taken to the cleaners by the insurance companies.
There are 2 possible reasons for this -
    1. The insurance companies know that young people have so much money at their disposal and they want a share of it
      or
    2. Male drivers aged under 21 are 10 times more likely to have a car accident than male drivers aged 35 or over
Which do you think it is?

Yes I Know you are correct:) But a quote of £12,000 for a 1 litre arosa that was worth about £1.200 is a complete joke:rotfl:
Do we agree on that one?

Bit of an odd one, but look at something like a 1.2 Fiat Punto. The actual spec on the car makes a massive difference. At 19 I had a Ford Puma (2600 a year insurance :O) at 21 I had a mini cooper (1200 on insurance!!)

Just try a few different cars. Has he done Pass Plus? This can help a lot!
Yeah its a strange area this one.
My eldest son who is 20 owns a 1.3 fiesta, he pays about £1.300 to insure it. A friend of his is selling a fiesta of the same age but has upgraded everything on the car. It has a 1.7 puma engine that is tunned to race spec. My son was interested in the car so phoned his insurance company to get a quote. They quoted £980 and he almost fell off his chair at the time. When he asked why this 1.7 was cheaper than his 1.3 the lady could not realy explain it.:(
  • I passed my test when I was 20, insurance was still expensive but not horrendous. I'm a woman so that helped, but I think what made a big difference was I'm from London and I moved to the south coast 10 days after I passed my test so the area was less risky to insurers.

My first year on a 1994 1.6l manual VW Golf CL was £1070 fully comp. Out of interest while I was comparing quotes I changed my sex to male and kept everything else the same to see what difference it would make and it doubled the cost!

I have now been driving for just over 3 years, but before my third year of insurance ended I bought a second car - a 1969 Ford Capri 1.6 Auto XL, obviously as I still had the Golf I couldn't use any of my no claims so I got a classic policy with restricted mileage through adrian flux that cost me £318 with my 27 year old boyfriend listed as a second driver (was impressed too as he's had 2 claims in the last 5 years - 1 for a no fault accident and the other for unrecovered theft last October).

I have no SORN'd the Golf to make the Capi my main car, while borrowing my boyfriend's BMW, and have 3 years no claims hanging around doing nothing. However if I wanted to retax and insure my Golf again it would still cost £200 more than the capri even with the no claims.

  • As one of the above posters said co operative install a black box. My friends brother has it there are certain rules and curfews to abide by and they monitor it but it's well worth it.
It's only in the car for a year and the insurance quote was really quite cheap, compared to tohers

That quote is probably more a "thanks, but we don't want your business" figure, but the sad fact of the matter is that young lads in cars are an accident waiting to happen.
Have you seen the amount of damage that one small car with 4 lads and a dubstep CD on board can do...?!

Has he considered taking any further driving lessons, or an advanced driving course? I have both the Rospa and IAM qualifications and that gives me a further 30% discount on top of 9 years no claims.

I don't think a lot of the quote is anything to do with the damage they might do to their own car, more to do with the damage they can do to others.

It doesn't matter how much the car is worth is they crash into a car worth £20,000.

When I was looking for my first car, I googled 'cheapest cars to insure' and only looked at them! Ended up with a 10 year old 1.0L Micra, so I can only suggest looking at old cars with small engines.

    It's discrimination!

I've been campaigning for years for the sector to be changed. Thankfully the EU courts ruled that females can no longer get cheaper car insurance than males. Yes it will put up females policies next year, but we cannot have discrimination!

It's unfair to say that all young drivers are idiots and cause trouble. Though I accept that a number of young drivers do cause trouble, show off to their girlfriends (kill them also when things go wrong).

Hopefully the industry will change (or be forced to change by the human rights courts) soon.

Sounds great. What do you pay per year?
