New Driver Car Insurance

My Son would like a car for his eighteenth birthday. We have been looking around and have seen a number of small cars that would suit.
But trying to get insurance is a complete joke. On a 1 litre Arosa or Lupo thirdparty is £2800 a year, and a 1.4 rover 25 was £3800.
What Bloody Chance do New drivers have? It would be cheaper to take a chance and not bother with any sort of cover:mad: Not that we would ever do that:D but I can understand why some people do. My eldest son had a quote of £12.000 from one insurance company a year or two ago for a 1 litre arosa :rotfl:
But seriously what chance have our youth got?

Have you looked at the cost for fully comp? It can be cheaper than just third party.
My cousin had the same problem recently and the cost to insure him on a clio was just under £5000 but if he drives his grandparents old banger it £1500 (don't remember what car it is but it's not the sort of thing a teenage boy wants to be seen in)0 -
I know you said you wouldnt comtemplate not paying for insurance but it really wouldnt be easier.
Say he didnt have insurance, he hit a car, totalled it 4 passengers are really badly injured, one then dies,
How would he pay for the damage to their car, the damage to people, the compensation, etc. etc.
Believe me, it really wouldnt be worth the risk.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -

Well said. Also it is ILLEGAL to drive without insurance. It's not optional!! He should be paying for it himself...if he can't afford it he shouldn't be driving!!Saving money like a trouper...0 -
Try adding yourself on as added drivers, even if you will never drive the car it will most likely bring the quotes down.0

Adding parents on as additional drivers is a good one. But I do agree that he should find a way to pay himself. Getting a car is usually the first real independence a person gets and to pay for it yourself is all the more sweet.
I know a couple of people who get their parents to pay for the insurance in one lump sum (it is often a lot cheaper for new drivers to pay in one go) and then they pay their parents a monthly amount.
Also, it is worth considering buying a classic car. My first car was a 1970 VW beetle. I know I am female so the insurance would be less anyway but the insurance for my first year was only about £280. I wouldn't have been able to afford it any other way.
A classic car will often have just the same amount of problems as say a 10 - 15 year old car so I doubt it would cost more in the long run.
Good luck!0 -
There is a way to find all the cheapest insurance band cars, try google as I have no idea where it is.
Small fiats etc are always good, plus adding parents onto policy. I'm 20, 21 next month and 3 years driving next month too. My insurance is still £97 a month.
Although it will go down next renewal. It's just one of the prices of driving I'm afraidHi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
My fiance started driving almost 2 years ago (when he was 22), he had been paying insurance on a car he owned whilst he had his provisional licence but once he passed, these were the cheapest for him http://www.gsi-insurance.com/car/insurance-for-young-drivers
They weren't any good for me but tend to be good for young males.
Please don't insure yourself and have him as a named driver, it is illegal. I do agree with the above, if he can't afford to buy the insurance, he shouldn't be driving.
Also remember you can always haggle the prices and small companies can be much cheaper. Also, many companies do multi car discount (Admiral, Churchill, Direct Line etc) which is worth considering if anyone else in the household insures with them.0 -
Have a look at Cooperative young drivers... I believe they install a black box into the car... and then premiums are based on how safe, or unsafe the driving is. Also Admiral are good if you already insure other cars with them.Started 30/08/2011Biggest Wins: GHD's, 5* Trip to London, VIP Trip to Isle of MTV Festival in Malta.
Thanks so much to all who post

He would never do anything illegal like not get insurance, it was something that alot of the family and friends quoted. We always look at the local magistrates court briefs in our weekly paper and the fines people get for not having the correct cover on their vehicles is laughable, even repeat offenders i.e. disqualified drivers etc. Most of them are young and I think if the insurance was not so dam high for these youngsters then they may not be tempted to drive illegal.I know you said you wouldnt comtemplate not paying for insurance but it really wouldnt be easier.

My son will be paying for the insurance but as he is off to uni soon I dont know how the hell he is going to do it.
We have looked at the co op insurance, the one with the black box in the car and that seems the best one so far.
It just upsets me that these youngsters that need a car to get to work, uni etc are taken to the cleaners by the insurance companies.0 -
Bit of an odd one, but look at something like a 1.2 Fiat Punto. The actual spec on the car makes a massive difference. At 19 I had a Ford Puma (2600 a year insurance :O) at 21 I had a mini cooper (1200 on insurance!!)
Just try a few different cars. Has he done Pass Plus? This can help a lot!0
