    My previous comment was wrong.

MID has apparently been compulsory since some time in 2010. It is the UK's way of complying with an EC Directive.

However, it is not the driver's responsibility to ensure that a company vehicle is on the database..

(In fact, it isn't for the driver of a private vehicle either).

It may not be your responsibility, but you're the one they stop, and you're the one the dvla send the fine to if the car shows as taxed but not insured on askmid. So it's certainly your problem.

DVLA will deal with the registered keeper - they are liable, not the driver. s.144A, Road Traffic Act 188.

The car will be on a corporate block policy.

It may NEVER show on MID.

I occasionally borrow a company car which is insured under a company policy, and it shows as insured on askmid, so the above is clearly rubbish.

AFAIK someone in the company updates the insurance database (probably directly on the insurer's system) each time a new car arrives or one leaves at the end of the lease.

This may not be required under certain company policies (eg motor trade) but where the fleet is reasonably static I would expect most insurers to have a similar arrangement so that they can assess the risks properly.

You should be making enquiries with your employer about this. Ask for a copy of the certificate to carry with you.

You didn't read my 2nd post on this thread then ;)

Things have changed since 2010, before when many vehicles on block policies didn't appear on the database, because there were apparently no penalties for fleet managers not updating it.

Indeed, my fleet department confirmed that it should show on askmid and they would get on the insurers straightaway. I was assured that I / the car was fully insured and I could download a policy from our intranet.

A variation on this theme is where the letters/numbers are transposed by a dimwitted insurance clerk - you know 0 for O and l for 1. AskMID didn;t gold my reg, but when I entered one of the variants, up it came....

Most of it's fully automated so if you use a website to buy your cover whatever reg you enter will be supplied to the MID.

It's important where ever you buy cover to check the registration shown on your Certificate of Insurance
