 I'm having a problem with NPower. About 6 months ago I was stopped in Morrisons by a couple of their sales people and asked whether I wanted to switch. I was moving into a new rental property and said I couldn't make any decisions as yet, but didn't mind receiving further information on their service. I received numerous letters from them since then but after reading the first one or two I decided I wasn't interested and so ignored the stream of letters that kept coming through my door.

I am due to move out of this property on Friday (23 March) and by chance my husband opened one of their letters to find a find a final reminder for £105.47. I just called NPower to alert them to their mistake, because I've been paying BG and EDF, and more recently Southern Electric, but now they claim that they switched me over in November 2006 and that I would have to pay them or risk the consequences, even though I NEVER signed an agreement or decided to switch!! The customer service rep. I spoke to says that I will be liable for this even though I never asked for it, but I can't accept this is right. Help!! What do I do? Can they make me pay???

I need a swift response as I'm waiting for a call-back from the Customer Service Manager.

    Hi Marilize

So if I get this right, you were with British Gas, then EDF, then Southern Electric? Few questions
    - did you ever give a meter reading, or meter reference (MPAN) number to npower?
    - did you similarly send any meter reading to Southern Electric?
    - how were you paying SE (e.g. Direct Debit) and did these DDs stop?
    - did you receive any information from SE about you leaving them?
    - did you keep a copy of the contract that npower claim you signed? If not, then ask them to send you another copy of it.
    - did you keep all the other letters npower sent you?
    - have npower never sent you any other bills?

The bottom line is that if you didn't sign a contract, then npower cannot make you pay for anything, although of course you still used the power and therefore have to pay SE. If you did actually sign a contract, even though you believe you didn't, then you are probably liable since it's outside the cooling off period.

What annoys me about nPower is that if you are on their Standard rates they will not let you switch to one of their cheaper online tariffs. They want you to switch away from them to someone else for 28 days then apply back with nPower for their online tariff. As if anyone could be bothered to do that!!

    Ridiculous if you ask me:confused:

Untrue, I am on Standard nPower rate.

I emailed them and said what could they offer me, and they offered to transfer me to their sign online tarriff.

Marilize posted exactly the same post here and it has been discussed:

I really wish people wouldn't do this!
