Thanks for your input but we've already advised the OP to bring out the big guns if the store itself (well the manager) is unhelpful;) - softly softly catchee monkey and all that;)

 how rude, they may not have read the thread, but that didnt need to be said.
edited to avoid distracting from the nice result-
i dont think anyone on a forum should be told they dont need to post. Open forum, no "We" .

Oh come on! I wasn't rude at all. I was merely pointing out that I and other posters had suggested a complaint route for the OP to take, and used friendly smileys and I wasn't personal nor did I suggest to that poster that it would be a good idea to actually read the thread and what had been said.

@ OP that sounds like a good outcome, thanks for updating us.

@ Hollydays - no-one was told not to post! I actually thanked the poster for their input! 'We' were the posters who had posted previously, that's all - not attempting to suggest that there was some sort of exclusive club.

Well the store manager has just phoned me back and i told her everything and she was shocked and said that me and my son should not have been treated like that

She said that the staff are trained to let those with disabilities to have a carer with them regardless of male/female changing rooms they are allowed into the disabled changing room

she took the time i went in and is going to speak to the member of staff and she also took my address to send me some vouchers as a way of an apology

i wasnt after any compensation i just wanted to make her aware of what had happened so as it doesnt happen to anyone else or myself and my son again

she said to bring my son in any time and i can go into the changing room with him and that she hopes this incident doesnt put me off

i am happy with this outcome so dont think i should take it any further

    thanks for all your help/advice

Good outcome and your action was proportionate to the issue IMO.

As suggested by many on this thread, it seems the problem was not inherent to M&S in general - and was a local issue.

It seems it was just a member of staff who perhaps needed additional advice on the matter and was resolved locally.

OP, glad you got the right result. As I was reading the thread I did think it sounded like a sales assistant following rules without fully understanding them, or the reasons for them! When I was a teenager working in shops, I applied a lot less common sense than I do these days...

Next time you know now to not walk away but to ask for and demand to see the store manager.

Reminds me of the last time I was I M&S, I wanted to try on a pair of trousers only to be told that I couldn't as they didn't have enough staff to cover them, is was a pain to have to take them home and return if they didn't fit, they still refused to let me use the changing room which I could of used unsupervised, I then asked what would happen if I just tried the trousers on on the shop floor (I have no shame lol). They still refused to let me use the changing room and said I could use the men's toilets to try the trousers on, which I did, bit daft really

My dad had this issue once when we were kids and he just tried them on in the middle of the store. After the third pair had gone on and they realised he was commando they swiftly opened the changing rooms. Was quite funny at the time but these days he would have got done for indecent exposure.

Surprised you could do this. Usually, by the entrance to the toilets, there is a notice to say that you can't enter until you have paid for any items you are carrying.

I do think that it would be better to approach the store manager/supervisor first. I'd be annoyed if a customer bypassed me and went straight to the top (and i'm not a retail manager).
  • O God, why why why would you try on pants in a shop if you were going commando?!?!?! I am laughing my head off whilst simultaneously feeling a leeeetle bit sick at the thought of someone else's bare groin being in my pants first.

Nice result, OP - hope your son enjoys his prom xx
