Would it help if you created a spreadsheet in excel or calc in openoffice or whatever its called. You have a row for each direct debit and a collumn for every month and enter in the direct debit amounts for each month, enter your salary at the bottom and do a calculation to tell you whats left onc eall the DD's are paid.
  • Sorry to hear about your situation.

From your SOA, it's clear that you are not falling short of money because of not enough funds coming in - it's your OH's financial mismanagement that is causing your family the trouble.

    You can try this :-
    • If any direct debt are set to be taken out from credit card then move them to the main bank account - so you don't go over credit limit.
    • For all non-paper bill accounts, register yourself for ONLINE account. Usually when a bill is due, the bill appears ONLINE 14 days before the due date. This way you will not get caught off-guard (like £240 taken out of account when you were expecting £40.)
    • Change all direct debt dates to one or two days after payday.
    • Open another account and set an standing order for exactly 50% of salary to be paid in that account on payday. (and lock/hide/burry the debt card for your main account. DO NOT use main bank account card for any expense - unless absolutely necessary.)
    • You take control of new account.
Mortgage deposit pot June 2012 = almost there.

It sounds like you will have to do it all yourself. I know how this feels, but its worth it to save you from headaches!

Get his salary paid into a joint account. Sort out what money needs to go into the bills account and what needs to be spent on food, petrol etc.
What ever is left for him, give to him in cash, or put into a savings account with a card, so he can access it at ATMs.

This means that once its gone its gone! No overdrafts to dip into so he really has no choice but to budget.

This will really make him look at what he spends his free money on and he will think twice before wasting it on pointless things.

I agree its pathetic and literally babysitting him, but lets face it! Most Men and complete wallys when it comes to money :p
    Total Mortgage OP £61,000
    Outstanding Mortgage £27,971
    Emergency Fund £62,100

I know this isn't what you want to hear but shouting at your husband every day is surely doing more harm than good.

You might be able to get further with it if you step back and see things from his point of view. He works hard I'm sure and definitely brings in a good wage. I'm not sure what you expect him to do to raise more money? You're already selling things from the house. Maybe if you asked him to do something specific, you'd have more success.

Why are you so unwilling to consider working 1 day a week? You keep saying eBay etc brings in more but this would be in addition not instead. You surely can only sell things for so long before you run out of stuff. Even 1 day working in the local supermarket or whatever would be over £250 a month.

This is a joint account the DD comes out of? In that case it is not reasonable to give your husband exclusive blame. You can see what direct debits are linked to the account online and you can see what date they were taken in the past. Your husband is not exclusively responsible for paying the bills or managing a joint account.

You need to TALK to each other about this. If you really think your only option is shouting then honestly you both seem as unreasonable as each other.
