DS having some learning problems, not that school seem to see it, he hasn't got any actual learning problem they can easily identify but i KNOW he can do more than they are letting him get away with and i don't want him not fulfilling his potential by getting overlooked, don't know if that makes sense:(.

Can you tell i'm freezing and grumpy? Ohh just having a fed up and mega broke feeling, must go and worship at my dresser of Emma Bridgewater nostalgic tranquility! and possibly wonder at how much i'd get on ebay:p.

Oh and the house is a major mess, i HATE it and yet i'm not getting it cleared. Even looked at flylady again and i don't mind doing decluttering but i have nowhere to tidy to so it never improves.

Right need to stop wallowing and DO SOMETHING, ANYTHING... cup of tea then?:rotfl:

  • Going to see a friend today who is trying very hard to be off-grid, so will be picking her brain about the heating / hot water stuff.
Spent yesterday chasing up the heating engineers for quotes, boy these guys must be busy:D or maybe they are scared of the dog / children:eek:.

  • Interested to hear more about living off grid. I'm looking at changes in Portugal to make it as cheap to run as possible, when we live there.

Good luck chasing down heating engineers.

  • Hi Tilly,
she has solar panels that are meant to power her electric aga, but electric agas can be turned on and off and when heating from cold take about 5 hours to heat up. The benefit of agas to my mind is the fact they are always on, so you can knock up a batch of scones at whim AND the major point IMO is they are heat store big lumps of cast iron, so when they are on all the time they throw out heat to the kitchen, room above and anywhere else they can reach. Because her's isn't on all the time it isn't acting as a radiator so it was COLD with an aga - unheard of:eek:.
So she has a woodburner too, that was fab, it throws out the heat, as unlike ours the flue is in the room, not up a chimney, so you are effectively recovering heat from it. It also goes up through the room above and heats it too.
She is getting her solar FIT but it's not as good as predicted.
Now wishes she had underfloor heating put in too but too expensive to do it now.

I don't know what the winter is like in Portugal, one of the guys here talked about air recovery as being the way forward, and that might work really well in a warmer climate!
I wouldn't mind a turbine but they are expensive obviously, so you'd need to get an energy audit and take advice from there - good luck.
