I have 3 babies, just about to get their first true leaves. One is taller than the others but is bent over, it is holding its own. It has a mainly white stem with a little green just starting to show at the base. One has a 3/4 green stem and the third a fully green stem. The green stems look thicker and sturdier. All three are doing better outside and I like the gentle quivering they get from a slight breeze as it makes stronger stems

I won`t be watering until my moisture meter says `dry`and I have my fingers crossed after my worthless attempt last year, when they failed because of rot
  • Mine have been terrible this year too.

Had them on the south facing windowsill, on a heated propagator tray to get them going (turned off heat as soon as they appeared, and they went all leggy. they have since shrivelled up :( I think too much water but not sure.

Kittie, are yours in growbags, pots, in a greenhouse or out in the ground?

Dont grow cucumbers but courgettes totally failure this year, I managed to get some free surplus from someone. I also had problems with virtually all seeds including radish. I blame it entirely on cold damp weather. Only thing seems to be growing well for us is onions. Seeds that have germinated have been eaten by snails/slugs. Raised bed been dug up several times by cats or our cat despite having nets up

Its very hard getting anything to germinate unless you have a greenhouse or enough space in house

I have had to buy in much of my stock of flowers like marigolds and other flowers.

I put them in growtubs this year and mounded the soil up. I just replaced the one with the mostly white stem as the stem is too weak and will eventually fail. I just put in a new seedling with a green stem already. They are out now in a bright place which is also semi shaded by a trellis. The garden is a sun trap and is always warm

Last year I had 2 marketmore in a large rectangular container and I got one cucumber. I have been more careful this year and am using very nice compost and burpless seeds. I must say it will be more satisfying than anything

Courgettes are mostly on the allotment under shady, wind breaking net, three days on and they look strong

growtubs are pricey but I started my collection 7 years ago and now have 21. They are full of chillis, peppers and also cucs

We planted our tomatoes, cucumber, tomatoes and peppers late this year as we dont have a heated greenhouse. The lettuce, cucumbers and tomatoes have germinated but i think ive given up on the peppers.

Some of the bedding plants have taken off too and i only planted them on Friday.

Cucumbers like it warm, really warm. A minimum of 20c in my experiance and preferably more to really get them going. With this cold spring they're just curling up their toes and dying.

People seem to make the mistake of sowing them too early. Unlike tomatoes or especially peppers they grow really fast so don't even think about sowing them until May and even then get them going with some heat.

Peppers take a long time to germinate 2 or 3 weeks in my experiance and they grow really slowly it's best to start them as early as possible.

    Arghhh. cucumbers!!
that little baby flopped after I moved it to a sheltered bright place, it is quite windy elsewhere, drat too much sun. Like looking after a child in nursery, I have moved it pronto and it is now sitting in a sheltered and shady place. No water or anything. Got my fingers crossed now. It should survive if it stands up again by tonight

The other 2 babies are hardly growing at all and their first leaves are only about 5 mm

We were at a couple of garden centres at the weekend and noticed that there were very few decent looking cucumber plants for sale. It must be the cold, dull weather we have been experiencing. My tomatoes are well advanced this year. five out of seven have flowers on , all different varieties. Very strange growing season.

Let`s have a cucumber update from you

I lost one and have two, both of which are pretty static and just showing their third true leaves. I moved them from open sheltered to a very sheltered place by the french doors, so they get any sun :rotfl: but no rain or wind battering. I am waiting for the soil to dry out further because I want to give them some phostrogen. They look healthy enough but they have become a challenge

I doubt I`ll be growing cucumbers next year
