By the sound of it then although I have 500 free texts I'm limited to sending no more than approx two at anytime ( given the size ).

In my Message Settings I see 100k/200k/300k limit which was on 300k. This as now been reduced to 100k so fingers crossed.
I see no option of "whether to send mms or sms" so this must be the phone software?

This has got me thinking, does all phones work like my HTC Desire in relation to sending texts?0

I can confirm that in the past I've fallen foul of this 'feature' on an android handset. I simply installed 'handcent' for texting, rather than use the inbuilt texting app. Handcent has got the option to not have long SMS's converted to mms. I don't use an android handset any more (saw the light and moved to WP7!) but my daughter does. She uses handcent, and we've never had this issue for her. (and being a teenager, she LOVES her texting!)

Thanks for the info Tony, will give handcent a try.

I'll make a move to another phone when this contract ends.

I understand if the mms is not included in the plan, but how do I know when I'm sending one?
Or how many sms = one mms?

Please don't get me wrong 17p is neither here nor there its just annoys me when I don't know why it happens.

You can just delete MMS setting so your phone cant send them - but forwarding jokes (chain messages) is exactly where your problem is (your mms are coming from) and a bit nieve not to check this out 1st
When will the "Edit" and "Quote" button get fixed on the mobile web interface?

I thought it was when you sent a picture?

It is - but because it can be used for sending pictures does not exclude it from sending other 'multi-media' (songs) and long text messages
