17p charges ?

I'm with T-mobile at the moment ( £30pm ) with 500 free texts/600mins/ and unlimited landline/internet.

Yet every month I seem to have a 17p or even 34p charge added.

On asking at the t-mobile shop WHY this should happen they tell me its because I sent a MMX or something ? Yet the only time I use the text sms is when I receive a joke (like we all do ) and forward it on...to no more than 4.

As I don't use the phone for anything like MMX, I'm wondering if when I forward these odd texts the phone is sending them as a MMX instead of texts.

Hope this makes sense.

I think it's MMS, not MMX.
    Multimedia Messaging Service.
Don't know why they charge you for this, but I think the itemised bill is the first place to start with.
I think, depending on settings, long texts (SMS) can be sent as MMS.

Thanks Grumbler, this is what the t-mobile shop thinks but it sounded suspect.

My phone is the HTC Desire so will have a look at the settings.

Or better still can anyone help with the settings ?

    Thanks again.

I understand if the mms is not included in the plan, but how do I know when I'm sending one?
Or how many sms = one mms?

Please don't get me wrong 17p is neither here nor there its just annoys me when I don't know why it happens.

I thought it was when you sent a picture?

If I remember correctly, when I had an HTC Desire there was an option in the settings to stop long texts such as forwarded jokes etc to stop being sent as a mms if they were too long for a normal text message. It is well documented as an issue on google. Hope that helps.

Thanks for that David will check the settings.

Maybe I'm confusing some but I have never sent a picture !! if that is what mms does only a multiple of texts (4 or 5) at once.

Anyway it sounds as though you have found the problem.

International text will cost 17p on t-mobile. Or its selecting MMS rather SMS when you are texting - as pointed out by others.
Best to use something like rebtel for cheap alternative for international SMS.

AFAIK a SMS cannot be longer than 160 characters. If it's longer it's either get split into several SMSs or gets sent like a MMS. Don't know how you can control this though.

By the sound of it then although I have 500 free texts I'm limited to sending no more than approx two at anytime ( given the size ).

In my Message Settings I see 100k/200k/300k limit which was on 300k. This as now been reduced to 100k so fingers crossed.
I see no option of "whether to send mms or sms" so this must be the phone software?

This has got me thinking, does all phones work like my HTC Desire in relation to sending texts?
