I think that some foods are generally unpopular with kids. Sprouts were a veg my kids didn't like and I made them eat 1. They both eat them now.
My daughter is the funniest, she can't eat mushrooms or runner/green beans because they 'squeak' in her teeth!
My neighbour once told me that she wouldn't tolerate fussy eaters and everyone had to eat what she gave them. A few minutes later she said she couldn't abide root vegetables and never ate them. When pointed out to her that this was fussiness, she said it wasn't because all root vegetables were horrible!0 -
My friend used to have to feed the family before taking them to her in-laws if they were invited for a Sunday roast. Her mother-in-law would be dishing up and ask 'would you like one potato, or two?' and was very disapproving if you asked for two! My friend was horrified the first time they went, she was expecting a 'normal' sized plateful. The kids were crying with hunger two hours later so it was straight off to McDonalds on the way home. After that, they always had a roast before going for Sunday dinner at gran's house!0

We get this too, my MIL used to have an eating disorder and now she's 'okay' again but when she cooks, it's one potato each, a small handful of beans, and some anchovies - say three each. Happily, my 'fussy' 2 year old (he's not really) gets to eat what he wants as he's a growing boy. We eat again later! DH, when he cooks, cooks for about 4 even though there's 2 of us!
My FIL won't allow fish to be cooked in the house, and also won't eat lamb or chicken, I'm very glad I've never had to cook for him. His father in turn wouldn't eat beef or chicken, or many vegetables. Neither of them will eat a vegetarian meal, so it doesn't leave you with many options. Luckily DH eats anything and everything, I don't think there's anything he doesn't like.
I was the 'fussier' eater when we got together, not so much fussy, just that we had very little money growing up and I hadn't tried a lot of different things. I eat veg and any meat, but I'd never had indian food, for example. For ages I didn't like curry but I do now, and although I still don't like olives or peppers, I'll try anything, and my favourite food is sushi - or anything Japanese. I love japanese pickle, and seasoned seaweed, and they're just weird flavours that we don't really get over here. So I'm really glad I've changed my eating habits. With DS, he loves pasta, rice noodles and seafood, but isn't so good with undisguised vegetables, but we now give him whatever we have and if he doesn't eat it, he won't get anything else. We're hoping that this way he'll get used to eating real homemade food.
Talking of which...off to make meatballs!Great thread.
