I am upset by how many St George's Crosses are upside-down too ;-)

OK ... I know they're Union "Flags" and not Jacks !
Not if you're flying one on your boat then they are Jacks

Isn't the upside down flag a sign of distress? Maybe it's just a sign that we're just a distressed union at the minute. A mini rebellion by Poundland and others ;)

Although, equally, maybe that's why they're being sold at Poundland... Maybe they got them cheap for being defective...

From the Jackstaff on the bow.:) Now, what's the difference between a ship and a boat?:p
Yes, it annoys me too. When there's something "official" happening and there are people waving small Union Flags, on sticks, from the crowd, I notice lots of those are upside down. Most are no doubt made in and imported, like most things now, from China anyway!

That's a great one. I've heard all sorts of reasons, my favourite being whether they tilt in or out when turning a corner, but I don't actually think there's a definitive answer. In the main, I think it simply comes down to size (which of course can be interpretative).

Of course in the RN, a surface vessel is always a 'ship' and a submarine a 'boat'. Although they have little dinghies and whatnot in the RN. Are these still 'ships'?

    It's a minefield!

I think the problem is that no-one would notice if they were! :rotfl:

It's a simple mistake that probably represents the knowledge of most folk in the country. I reckon 8 out of 10 wouldn't notice it.

There's a Daily Mail article in this somewhere!
  • Well it looks like Poundland gets the royal seal of approval!

There's a video of them shopping in there on youtube - look for Poundland party, as I'm a new user I can't post the link :-(

Well you learn something new everyday.

Should I be embarrassed to admit I did not know there was a right way and a wrong way to fly the flag? I din't even realise there were thicker white bands, i thought they were all the same.:o

I've just asked OH and he said he knew but can't remember how he knew.

It's not exactly the kind of thing we got taught in school. :undecided

A boat can be carried on-board a ship but not vice-versa is one I've heard
