    Google Picasa

Picasa is not a desktop publishing application. It's an organiser with rudimentary corrective features.

try the Serif stuff - they have a free version of each of their apps or a pay option for the latest version

I second GIMP - it's pretty easy to pick up and lots of tutorials to do more complex things if you need to.

Nothing, in the same way some prefer to create web pages in Notepad rather than Dreamweaver

But given the OP ( whilst he did also specify picture editor ) specified flyer creation - I think most could agree that you would get a better level of control over the content using a simple DTP type application compared to an image editor.

But it depends entirely on the OPs expectation /definition of a flyer

At the end of the day Paint , Paint.NET and Serif Page Plus all cost the same

A vector-based program is usually better for posters/flyers. Some of these are free, some aren't:

Inkscape - Serif DrawPlus - Xara Photo & Graphics Designer (formerly Xara Xtreme) - CorelDraw (Home & Student version available).

Error! - Keyboard not attached. Press any key to continue.

Tanglefoot, I do believe the request was for a free picture editor! Not a desktop publisher, Picasa is ideal it's free and pretty simple to use
