We also have one very similar to these, and I would NOT recommend it:

It's a crappy shape (narrower at the top than the sides) and the door isn't secure enough to withstand even our most docile ferret. It is great for what we need it for because luckily a ferret is outfoxed by a cunning velcro strap...but I wouldn't like to trust any of the cats in it.

I've got a couple similar to this

Fine for cats about 5 or 6kg.
Manufacturer/supplier is Rosewood Pet Products but I bought them from pet department at local garden centre.

I would not recommend this type of carrier posted above. I have seen someone carrying this type of carrier with cat in residence and the clips at the top gave way and the cat escaped (in a public place). The problem is that the weight of the carrier including the cat/s is taken by the lid clips.

I use carriers made of wire mesh covered in plastic where the lid id secured using a rod going through loops. Similar to these (sadly the manufacturer of mine are now out of production.

I put a litter tray and water bowl clipped to the wire for long journeys and cover with a blanket.

I also have a trolley if I am carrying a heavy cat ( I also have a cat over 6kg) or more than one cat.

You can get ones with wheels or even strollers !! :)

PPS - Zooplus is not the cheapest place to buy this, last time I looked it was cheaper on very.co.uk and rising from the ashes got it from somewhere much cheaper than Z+ too (it was another pet website but I can't remember which one!)

    I've got a Cabrio too - still on offer - http://www.petplanet.co.uk/product.asp?dept_id=953&pf_id=52107

I must say I find it fantastic - I still have to put the cats in through the front door but once at the vet, being able to open the lid and leave the cat in the carrier (where they feel more secure) made a huge difference when I had to take wee cat for her booster - she's normally a nightmare - thick gloves, 3 people etc when we go - but she was really well behaved!

I would always suggest a top opening carrier of one sort - so much easier to get a cat in or out. If you get a front opening carrier, make sure it has a metal door (plastic coated metal is fine) as the plastic doors are very delicate and easily break. The old wicker baskets are fantastic and last years but most vets will use the white (or other colour) wire carriers of a type shown by penny_pincha above. They will outlast your cat, work very well, give your cat a view. I have one for personal use and we use them all the time at work

Maybe it is not a good traveller because you are using the wrong type of basket??? Most cats don't travel further than the cattery or the vet though.

Thanks for all the comments. Can you believe I have never actually bought a cat carrier before? I use an ancient wicker basket, which is fine as none of mine ( so far) mess in the basket. I did have an old plastic one that I got from Freecycle as a back up but it was dropped and the fastenings snapped so it is no longer secure.
