Why do I feel guilty?

6 weeks ago we sold our static caravan to a single lady

At the time of viewing, I pointed out a couple of things that were wrong...a damaged cornice on wardrobe, and a dripping tap on shower.( I told her we thought it needed a replacement washer).
I was honest, needn't have mentioned anything, and she was happy to proceed, nothing more was said.

This was a second hand caravan, 5 hyears old, and no guarantees were given or implied.

Sale completed, she signed contract with site for new lease, and we banked the money.

6 weeks on..she has contacted me to tell me that she has had a plumber to visit, and the shower valve needs to be replaced at a cost of £200. She says she thinks that we should pay for this repair, and that she has already paid enough to us for the caravan.

Now while I think that the site plumber is overcharging anyway (similar valves at Screwfix and B&Q are £50-60) I have pondered on it all day, and have offered her £50 cheque as a goodwill gesture..

She has replied saying that she is very disappointed with me..and expects us to pay for whole repair, as valve was leaking when we sold her the caravan 6 weeks ago..

My hubby says we sold her the caravan with no guarantees, and she knew about problem beforehand, and we should not be liable...
His comment is what happens next month if the boiler breaks down, does she come back at us then...

Why then do I feel guilty??

There is no way you should feel guilty, you were kind enough to tell her about the problems before she bought the caravan (most people wouldn't), and to ask you to pay for it is wrong. She could have requested it was fixed before she bought it. I think she is wording her requests specifically to make you feel guilty, i.e very disappointed.

Good Luck with this hun. x x

Exactly what I thought. Ignore her.

Tell her the reason she paid second hand prices was because its a second hand caravan with the issues that go with it.

If she wants a faultless one in mint condition with an after-sales warranty, trying buying new from the manufacturer (and paying an accordingly higher price).

Had she of wanted an after sales warranty she should have gone to a dealer, when buying privately you take your chances. i think you have been more than fair.

She took the risk of it being a more expensive repiar than what you thought it may be when she bought it, and you were good enough to mention it, there are those that wouldnt so you have nothing to feel guilty about. Bought as seen

Have you paid the 50 pound? if not dont, you owe this cheeky so and so nothing.

You have been more than fair in my opinion, not all sellers are as nice.

She's a chancer. As you say, is she gonna come running to you with every problem that goes wrong? She bought a second hand caravan and has actually got 6 weeks use out of it, I'd understand if like the next day the shower collapsed or something.

Tell her to get to, and move on.

You need not have pointed out ANY problems with the caravan! she inspected it herself and paid for it. sorry, but with second hand caravans it is indeed 'sold as seen'.
You are NOT liable to pay for this repair. from the day she signed with the site owners she was liable to pay for her own repairs!
I would now withdraw the offer of £50 and offer to meet her in the small claims court (where she wouldnt have a chance of winning).

We bought a second hand static at the end of last season, and wouldn't dream of going back to the seller if any faults occured. We inspected it, and bought it as second hand, and fully expect to have to do repairs and maintenance to it. This was all factored into our affordabililty calculations and the offer that we made. It's all part and parcel of owning a caravan, you've got to budget for repairs!

I wouldn't give her £50 tbh, it was sold as second hand with defects, and the responsibility for repairs became hers the moment she bought it from you.
