Advice on window replacement please.

Take it from someone who knows! The first time I bought double glazing went to a national company - never again. Despite only wanting two windows replaced they tried to get me to do the whole lot and their quote was really expensive. I had to threaten them with the police to get them to leave.
The second time I needed double glazing which was last year, I only wanted one glass unit replaced due to the same problem that you have. I rang three local companies. Their reps came, measured the window, told me all about the glass ('A' rated etc) and went - no pressure. None of them got in contact after to get me to use their company. I picked one - they came and installed and the window is fantastic.
I will never use a national double glazing company again!0 -
Thanks
ok I'm going to call round a few local places. Thanks for all the help

Oh really, why is that? Do the bigger companies charge over the odds?
Allow me to give you an example fron last week, we had one of the "big" companies based near Leeds after 2 hours of pretending to be working out hugely complicated maths figures he came up with a price of £15000.
I told him to **** off to which he replied ah but thats only the list price I'm now going to work out your discount, that made it £8000.
After another hour or so the price was £4400 at which point I threw the con man out.0 -
I hate all their sales tactics. We had a local company in and they quoted over one hundred quid off but only if we signed up there and then. Said no one else would come out to us and they wouldn't give us another quote if we thought about it. So be prepared for con artists, just in case.I have had many Light Bulb Moments. The trouble is someone keeps turning the bulb off

Thanks for the heads up guys, I won't be using any big national company that's for sure. I had a look at the link ic sent for trustmark, big help there's a few local gazers that I'm looking into. It shouldn't be to big a job as it's just one part of the unit. Cheers again

recently replaced two d/g units with no hassle - measure up, including thickness of unit and get local d/g firm to supply - removal and fitting is simple diy
one thing to be wary of is size/weight - 1m X1m probably ok for one person - needed two of us to lift our living room unit0 -
google "window doctor"
It is possible to strip the unit, clean and reseal it. You'll also get some hits for new dg units.0 -
Where are you OP - maybe someone can recommend a local??.
We had a double glazing issue last year, it was a broken hinge rather than blown unit like you have but it required removing the whole unit to do.
We got a local guy from checkatrade and he was excellent and very reasonable and it was only a small job. We'll certainly use him when we get round to replacing our blown unit (long way down the priority list atm!!)0 -
My partner was thinking of getting a quote from Everest, is that a good company to use?
Jesus Christ!!!!
Don't go anywhere near those con-artists.
Use a local company - in ballpark figures, a sealed unit should be roughly £100/m2 plus fitting.
Go to Everest and you will get a quote that approaches the national debt of Greece....British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -

Well, actually, it is very much a case of 'you get what you pay for'. I am a time served carpenter, and have installed every window available in the trade, including Everest. You can, of course, get the 'Rep' to give his MCD (Managers discount), which will rip the price (and his commission) right down. Of course they will be the most expensive, but, you get a lifetime guarantee, so if any problems you get the whole unit replaced, FOC. Check out Youtube, for example for Anglian, and you will see how bad the condensation is on their 'rubbish' (I know, because I have Anglian in my house, which was installed before I bought it, and they are amongst the worst windows I have ever come across!)
If you are buying a car, a mini metro costs you very little, but a Bentley significantly more... they are both cars. funilly enough, I have ripped out the 11 year old Anglian composite front door because it failed, miserably, and replaced it with a very expensive, but lifetime guaranteed Every one. There, are, of course, fairly good quality products out there, but make sure they are A+10 energy rated, fully reinforced, and with a substantial guarantee, that is NOT insurance backed.
The 'Cloudy to Clear' option for replacement units that have blown, only give a 5 yr guarantee - waste of money!
Hope this helps?0
