Advice on window replacement please.

Hi all, I have a problem with a double glazed bedroom window in my house and id like some advice please. I'll try to explain this to the best of my ability.

The window seems to have a broken seal or something; between the panes condensation has formed or rain water somehow gotten in and left dirty looking streaks all in that one part of the window. Needless to say it looks absolutely awful and I feel like I’m wasting money paying the window cleaners as it looks like the window hasn’t been washed in a year. I’d like to have the window replaced but I’m not sure if I can just have that one window replaced or if I’d have to have the whole lot done. I've read that alot of glazers don't like to do just the one window but there isn't anything wrong with the rest of the windows.

Any idea how much it might cost me for the one window and if that's even possible? The window size is roughly 2 by 2 1/2 metres. Thanks.

No need to replace the complete window you just need a replacement glazing unit which any good glazier will be able to make. Are those measurements for just one glazing unit?

Hi thanks for your reply. Those measurements were for the whole window, the bit that’s damaged is roughly about 1 by 1/2 metres. I have very little knowledge when it comes to things like that and thought they would have to replace the whole window.

I don't suppose you'd have any idea on the cost of replacing that bit? I don't have alot of cash readily available and i don't want to claim on the house insurance. I figured i could either save up or work out a payment plan if it was quite expensive.

Yes, the seal has gone. You will need a replacement 'unit'.

Cost will depend not only on how big the unit is, the gap between the panes and whether the glass is a standard or special type.

It could be replaced by a keen DIYer, but I'd suggest it's worth getting someone in to do it. You can get an approximate idea of the cost of the unit by searching on ebay; there are varous companies on there that supply custom sized units to order.

Hi and thanks. Yes I think I'd have to get a professional in to fix it. I'll take a look at eBay thanks for the suggestion, get a rough idea of cost. My partner was thinking of getting a quote from Everest, is that a good company to use?

We need to replace a single window as the opening vent at the top doesn't shut properly. We have had a couple of quotes around the 500 quid mark. Of course they have said 'oh you will have trouble because it's just one window' but very few companies will refuse business in the current economic climate. I suggest you get quotes from a few companies.

We looked at doing it ourselves but it seems we would have to get the building inspector out to approve it. You will need to do this if your fitter is not FENSA approved. This information will be available on their website.

I would recommend you go to some friendly local glazing companies for quotes, rather than the big nationals.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

Ok great thanks :) well I'll start phoning local companies tomorrow for quotes I think, I'll keep an eye out on their websites for the FENSA approved thing thanks for the info :). My partner has also suggested I look into Anglian Windows, so I might check them out to.

Oh really, why is that? Do the bigger companies charge over the odds?

Simple answer, no. They tried to take my grandad to the cleaners by presuring him for an afternoon until he handed over a cheque. Steer clear, and stick local. Look at https://www.trustmark.org.uk for people who have been vetted, if you can't find any recommendations through friends and family.

Wow  thats awful. See this is what I'm worried about. I'm currently very ill and housebound because of my illness, i'm on a lot of medication and I think I'd fold under a lot of pressure. I have family but not many live in my area. I think I'll find a company then let my partner deal with them, he is in a better position to deal with them than I am.
