Hi,

Was hoping someone out there can help with my long and complicated story. Went to vauxhall to buy a car for my son but could not get their interest free credit deal as it is with santander and my husband has adverse credit with them. My sons aunt said that she would act as guarantor for him but they said that he was too young (20 yrs old) she would have to get finance in her name with direct debit and we could just pay it to her. they said that he could still qualify for 7 days free insurance and when v5 comes through she could transfer his details onto it making him owner and registered keeper. Day before car was due to be delivered they rang to say that their had been a mistake and car woud have to remain in her name as she is on finance agreement. I have rang DVLA who say it doesn't matter who is on finance she can transfer details but have also rang santander who say everything has to stay in her name, if dvla details are changed to my sons they say we must pay all monies owed straight away .When i have tried to get it insured most are saying that they cant insure us so i am stuck as to what to do but he is supposed to start work with it on monday.

    Hi,

Just really need to know can i change documents to sons name as registered keeper and owner if his aunts name is on finance agreement with santander as i dont want to do anything illegal, and everyone from insurance broker to car dealership to santander and Dvla all seem to be giving me conflicting advice. Desperate for a reply please.

Loan in aunts name so they insist the car is registered to her, Thats their terms, If you dont like it then dont use them.
If you swap names and they find out they may insist on all the money being paid.

If she doesnt then her credit rating gets a hit. Debt collectors etc etc.

Only option is find a company that will insure him/them on the car.

Making sure that your son is put down as the main driver otherwise they will assume your front and refuse to payout.

    Get a personal loan instead?

Companies should insure, But rules out the online comparison websites etc.
    Find a local broker.

Nonesense about insurance, my car is in the wifes name. I just select her as the registered keeper.
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

    thanks for your reply,

What your saying makes sense just wish that car dealership had told us this before we bought and signed for car. Would have just opted for a cheap 2nd hand car and higher insurance if we would have known, but they gave us wrong info and now insurnce says that it will have to be his aunt that buys insurance and the free insurance that came with car runs out on fri and aunt is on holiday til next wed so it will be outside of our house for nearly a week with no insurance.

Can he not just insure with one that will? You just need one that will provide it in his name but with her noted as the owner and registered keeper. Comparison sites probably won't cater for this so just use them to find a price and then make some phone calls.

Remember there are continuous insurance rules in place now.

i thought that it dosent matter who pays for the car as long as the insurance and the DVLA details are of your sons name.

yes thats what insurance companies and dvla seem tothink too, its bristol street motors car dealership and santander the finance company that are telling me differently, they are saying because aunt signed finance and i am giving her the money every month it is still legally her car and everything will have to be in her name. They say that if it had gone through my parents it would have been different but because its my aunt and at a different address, thats what causes the problem. Wish i had not got car now as i am going to get hammered for even higher insurance. They have made things very complcated with keep giving incorrect info, anyone out there from santander to confirm things?

I bet it wont be outside your house with no insurance for that long, Before it gets towed away and impounded.

No insurance and you should SORN it.
