    I appreciate it was in 1984 but there must be local authority records of planning permission; and should be building control approval.

    Was the house a 'self-build' project? Without a building control certificate it shouldn't have got a mortgage for the previous owners.

    Just say the owner gets the mains redirected to another pipe is it ok to have unused pipe on your land and under your property! just a question i put to my partner in case we sell will it come up when we sell the property

    It is true and the house indeed does have water mains running under the house and for this reason we have pulled out of the property, for anyone cash buying please put searches on the property you are buying, you never know what is lurking underneath.

    I don't think you have read the thread correctly.

    It is not the OP's house. They were prospective buyers but have pulled out of the sale.
