Man and Van Removals -Prices, Feedback etc

Options
Hi, I wonder if anyone can help with this.

I need a Luton Van and Man to help us move next week, but there doesn't seem to be any central place where you can get and compare quotes, and customer feedback of these services.
Maybe I have spotted a gap in the market!

I understand by their nature that most will be individuals, but I don't know anyone who moved recently so can't ask for recommendations. I don't want to take a punt on a cowboy, but don't need the full Pickfords style removal service.

I also have no idea what a competitive rate is per hour, and whether insurance is required?
To this end, I am leaning towards one of the more established bigger companies such as Aussie Man and Van etc.

Can anyone provide any guidance?

Thanks.

When I was looking for a removal company, I used a site called moveme.com. You can put in your details and several companies will contact you with quotes. Warning - they do phone you all at once!

are there any notices in local shops/supermarkets for man and a van advertising their services? try googling white van man and your town/city and it should throw up a couple of hits. give them a call to get a feel for prices. i did the same a year ago and ended up paying about 300 quid for two men and a van to move us out of a four bed terrace which took about 5 hours.
  • I saw this on eBay:

Daisy, thanks for that link. Looks like the kind of thing I was looking for!

Fuzzy, cheers for the info. £300 for 5 hours sounds about right, prices I have seen so far were around the £60 per hour mark.

Shiply! You put up what you need moving and moving companies bid for your business. Used them once before with great success, will do so again very shortly. Provides feedback as well like ebay.

  • Shiply charge you when you accept a quote though. It's what stopped me using them.

So when they drop your furniture off the back of the van, do you think they will have liability insurance to pay for it?

  • We googled man with a van and found a guy who charged us by the hour, I can't remember exactly what but about £70, Gatwick area. We specifically needed one that could take our >2m sofas so most didn't have big enough vans, I think the one we got was Luton type.

The guy was Slovakian although we had communicated by email so didn't realise until he turned up but he was settled here, no reason to think he was any less legitimate than a similar British guy. He was, despite appearances, strong as an ox - put the OH to shame!! We were very pleased and rounded up what we owed him as well as giving him a M&S BLT and Coke which he seemed happy with, especially the latter as it was c25c!!

There is a very good website called anyvan.com. This good website, there is no charge, and you go by quotes and feedback review.once you have chosen the company, you pay deposit, and that deposit will deducted from the quote. You can e-mail the company and talk details before you accept the quote. A good website.:j
