Advice on advertised car - VW Golf

I saw a VW Polo, 2008 reg for £6990 at the VW garage.
Down the road at the Vauxhall garage I saw the 2011 Corsa for 7110. (Bare in mind that the price new was roughly the same)
VW's hold there value better. I'm not too sure why but they are dubbed to be decent cars by those in the 'know-how'
In addition, the Corsa may have had more spec than the Polo.
Whether you get the VW as when you sell it on it will have more value.
Therefore it depends on personal perference and circumstance.
Let's go on a quest together, and find out what really is so good about these VW's :rotfl:
Advertising. VW never sells you a car, they sell you a way of life. (Normally a middle aged way of life). People buy them because it's a safe thing to do. Skoda try to sell you the same product, but ever so slightly sexier, a bit of a mid life crisis buy for the middle aged way of life but still safe.0 -

VW = Safe = :money:

The one my wife had was certainly a way of life, a bank account emptying way of life, certainly not the reliable easy option claimed, coil packs £400 a go, filled with water when it rained, and it had this random cutting out thing, took it to the garage, Oh they all do that, its just one of the quirks ? !!!!!! ? You would have to be mental to buy that Alfa. They are nearly as badly made as FIATs.
The Astra is ok but the 1.4 is under powered. You'll find a nice 1.6 easily for £4k. Like others on this thread I wouldn't waste money on a VW Golf - the reliability thing is a myth and they are hugely overpriced. Skoda are a good shout. Seat maybe ok too but look out for loud road noise at high speeds.
A Focus would be a great bet so maybe you can convince the OH?0 -

How does this car sound? Or does anyone have any viable alternatives? Thanks!

Gosh I would let my GTI go for a little more than that all be it 3 door but just 64k on the clock, had it from new and would get another brand new car VW of course :cool:0 -
The petrol models can need new coil packs literally every few months at £400 each
The problems are with the earlier 1.8 20V engines not the 1.6FSI
Coil packs from £12 each, 4 required. Had one go in 14k not sure whether that was the one i put in. 1 min job carry a spare.
Cutting out, easy job clean throttle body out and reset the throttle via VAGCOM or similar. Or could just drive it 100 mile it should readjust by then.0 -
Paying that much for any car is insane on the face of it. Didn't realise they held their value so much!
Lucky I like crap British cars with loads of fake wood... £1600 on my 75 Estate and nearly 200k on the clock. Couldn't imagine chucking over double on something a similar age, with no toys inside. Madness.0 -
Thanks for all your responses people! I have been trying to convince the missus about the Focus!! What do you guys think of the Auris? Seems reasonably priced for what you get, no?0
